For those folks that went to Oshkosh - did anyone see a sample of the
new little engine package Valley Engineering is selling. Any flying
examples, how did it perform and comments?

Jerb

Valley had a new ultralight at AirVenture with the big twin engine on it. It
performed very well on that light plane. It flew every day thru their full
time period. They were expected to get this years yoyo award for the most
takeoffs and landings. I was amazed that they were able to design and build
a very refined airplane in only one year!

I talked with Larry Smith for some time about their big twin engine on a
Firestar II. Larry is convinced that almost any other prop other than a IVO
would perform better. He is pushing the turbo option for this engine but
said it isn't ready yet. He claims that the turbo will not over stress that
engine. His explanation is that with the lower compression ratio of the
turbo engine it sees no more ignition pressure just more duration. I don't
know enough to comment. He feels that the turbo will make the Firestar II
perform well even in that hot Texas air.

Hi,
amazing what can be done if it is imperative. The British de Havilland
Mosquito was 10 months from the go ahead from the Ministry to first flight.
The Mossie went faster, for longer with a bigger bomb load than the B17. Not
bad for 2 men and 2 engines.

Cheers

Pat

Jerb and others,

My Wife and I just got back from Oshkosh yesterday. We camped in Camp Scholler and somehow managed to miss seeing Rick Nielson, even after all the time we spent at the Kolb trailer and at the Valley eng. trailer. Enjoyed the visit at the Kolb trailer. Bruce , Travis, Dennis and the gang were accommodating as usual. I missed seeing Donnie and wish him a speedy recovery as I know He wanted to be there. We got to visit with Homer and Clara, and Homer appears to be getting younger rather than older. Got to meet Larry and Gene and bent their ears on there Generac conversion . The back yard flier flew quite well and sounded better than the 2-strokes we are used to hearing. It sounded sweet as it flew near our camper each morning and afternoon. I would put one of their engines on my firefly if it were lighter. Larry said it weighs 120 lbs. It didn't climb like my firefly, but It seemed adequate to me.

I checked out the 40 lb., 35 hp rotary eng that was on the M -squared UL. Very interesting. Static display sounded good. Very smooth! Cost was 6200 dollars! kinda steep. But I never saw it fly. For some reason they didn't fly it! Hmmmmm?

It seems that ULs are becoming a thing of the past as there is much more money in LSP aircraft. They were everywhere and most all were only offered ready ready to fly and did not offer kits. The backyard flier was the only new Ul there and their plane always had people around it!

On the way home we got to visit with Jack and Louise Hart. They have a beautiful new house in the country and the room for an 800' runway. But the best part is the large basement that he has for building. He has done more custom work on his Firefly than any I have ever seen. That Simmonini sounds really nice!
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit with the harts.
