Although unused, I am not sure of the condition of the sight tube. It has small discolored spots at about 2 foot intervals.
It seems hard, but maybe no worse than originally supplied? It does not seem to bend real easy. If I grip it with the thumb and pointer finger and squeeze as hard as I can, I cannot get the sidewalls to touch. It compresses about half ways. Assuming I don’t need to work out and strengthen my fingers, is this normal for this hose? What is it like brand new?? All answers welcome. I am ready to install this stuff, so now would be the time to chuck it too, and find a replacement of some sort.
Thanks for all responses,
Greg Fuchs

Greg,
I'd throw it out, especially if you intend to use Mogas.
There were a couple of good postings earlier this year, where the builders had used PVC sight tubes,
perhaps you can track them down in the archives, or maybe they will be re-posted ( from John L and Fred K I think )

Greg,
Dave refers in part to a post of mine a year back...relevant portion as
follows:

I've threaded this pipe for some 90 degree fittings and use it for the
sight gauge proper and connect it to some flex tubing from the
gascolator and for venting....not at all sure as to how it will
perform, but I'm hoping it will be more readable and durable than the
flex tubing.

Hi Dave,
No need for reposting..
Thanks for your response. I was thinking of mounting the original tubing to two fittings around the seat area. Since there would be so much left over from not doing the sight gauge up front, the plan was to replace it every year to solve the discoloration problem once exposed to fuel. Just wanted to know what the qualities of the tubing were when it was new, to see how much it had deteriorated in the intervening years. It seems to be on the way out, even with never being exposed to fuel, and in a plastic bag for some of its (limited) life. I am now assuming the tubing may be too far gone, and starting to look into other options, leaning towards the ½” pvc pipe. Not quite sure the best place to locate it, at this point. If someone has a link to, or a pic of one currently installed, it may give me a better idea.
Thanks again,
Greg

Hi Fred,
I have purchased some ½” I.D. clear pvc pipe, which is the smallest that the local plumbing supply had, but have not mounted it yet. I might go for the smaller stuff though, since you have furnished me with a supplier. To keep the weight down, am considering ‘plastic welding’ some pvc fittings to the end pieces of the tubing, but have never done it before, so the gotchas aren’t known yet. Then a location needs to be found for where to install it in the cockpit module. Do you have a few pictures of your install? This could help me find a place for it.
Someone on the matronix site has tried the PVC tubing with fuel for quite some time(John L, I think), and so far there is no yellowing. One restriction is temperature. I heard it will break down over time at 140 degrees F or so.
Thanks much,
Greg F.

Hi Greg,
Running the sight tube up the cockpit molding between the seats works well,
however you can't really see it in flight, unless your body is much more supple than mine.
I've tried most of the flexible tubing from Aircraft Spruce, and with Mogas they all discoloured
quickly, to the point that I could hardly see the fuel.
Changing the tubing is a bit of a pain, as you have to drain the tank.
The clear PVC pipe A/S #03-54100, looks as if it will work well, but I have not tried it myself.
