We plan to fly down to Northern California in mid September to visit our grandson and are looking for advice on the best place to land. They live in the Arcata area and it looks like the options would either be Arcata or Murray Field. We will probably need to rent a car, as well as have tie-downs for a few days. We would appreciate any feedback and advice from listers who are familiar with this area. Please reply off list to rdkennett(at)shaw.ca (rdkennett(at)shaw.ca).

HI
I also have daughter and grand kids in Arcata and you don't want to go into ACV. That airport in not GA friendly. Where you want to go is Murray KEKA. Fuel should be less $ there is maintance on the field, There was a good coffee shop. Enterprise will come get you and you can drive to your plane if I remember right.

I had a good experience at ACV. Rental car was fast and easy. Nice terminal area. SS gas not unusually expensive. Probably all similar to EKA.
Don't forget about the one big other factor, Weather. It is rare that you will get in and out of there without having to either file IFR or delay for VMC. I chose ACV primarily because it has an ILS. Turns out I arrived in VMC, but departed the next day into a 200' ceiling.
