Pat:
Now, Now, The "Skeeter" was faster, and could fly further than the B-17, but that was with a 1000 lb bomb load. Also it was more versatile in types of missions. Lets give credit where credit is due.

BOMB LOAD:
Depending on types of bombs, maximum normal load could go to 8,000 lbs. If B-17 was fitted with special external racks, maximum normal short-range bomb load could go as high as 17,600 lbs. Maximum range with 8000 lbs was 1100 miles.

The Mosquito twin Merlins an unarmed bomber could carry 1,000lb (454kg) of bombs for 1,500 miles (2400km) at a speed of almost 400mph (644km/h) which was almost twice that of current British bombers

Hi John,
I knew I wouldn`t be allowed to get away with that and I rather suspected it might be you to swat me down. It was all tongue in cheek anyway as I was really making the point about the speed of development.. Even there I cheated a bit as there was quite a bit of development on similar designs before the Ministry issued the official `go-ahead.

The RAF had a song the last two lines of which were ` The Americans are up there at 40,000feet
          But theyve only got a teeny weeny bomb`

There was also the story of the American briefing his men

The Fortresses will bomb from 30,000ft. The Liberators will bomb from 20,000ft. For Gods sake don`t get below 15000feet or you will get all mixed up with the RAF.

Good job we were on the same side, mostly.

The American I would really like to meet is the guy who gave me his mandolin as he was climbing into a truck on the way to getting loaded on the invasion fleet. About June3rd. I often wonder if he made it.

Pat

Pat;

Not John, but Brother Jim.

Yes the Skeeter was originally designed as a much larger airplane with I believe a crew of six. But ended up as a fantastic design.
