I have seen that several people are using NAPA 7220 self etching primer, and I started using it. But NAPA is 20 min farther than several other hardware stores. Has anyone used any other rattle can primers? If so, How has it worked? Also is 6061-t6 considered galvanized?
Thanks,
Derek Lewis

Derek,
6061-T6 is just aluminum, really corrosion resistant as aluminums go,
but still no etch or plating.
Suggest you continue with the self etch primer if it seems to work for you.

Hi Derek,
Self etch primers contain acid to eat through the aluminum oxide that
forms almost instantly on pure aluminum. This oxide is impossible
for paint to stick to. There are several different approaches to
deal with this and the self etch primer is ideal (in my opinion) when
you are doing small areas at a time.
I don't think it is possible to galvanize aluminum. This is a
process used primarily on steel. A pure zinc coating is placed on
the steel to prevent rust. To my knowledge there is no way to
successfully paint the zinc and it is nearly impossible to
remove. It also causes great difficulties for welders.
Good luck,
Paul

Derek,
I've been using Dupli-Color self etching primer. It sticks great to the aluminum. I first scuff it with a little scotch bright, and wash it well with a solvent to remove any residue and sharpee marks. I spray it outside with a dust mask. You can find this stuff almost anywhere that sells spray paint in rattle cans.

I used rust-oleum primer and paint rattle cans for the whole plane. It is still on after 3.5 years. I did do what Dan did as far as scuffing the surface and washing it down with lacquer thinner before priming. Everyone that has seen the plane cannot believe I did the plane with rattle cans. I am not an expert painter by any means but it came out looking pretty nice. (see pic) Inexpensive too.

Auto zone sells a good etching primer also.
