Folks,
This clip has recently generated a lot of comment.
The video was taken from the tower in Canberra, the Australian capital; it was on charter to an Australian operator, doing military lift for the Australian Department of Defence.
The performance displayed is typical of first generation jets, I can well remember getting airborne in a B707-320, and not hearing the click of the gear lever unlock solenoid (meaning the main gear squat switches had just released after the weight had come off the gear) until the “piano keys” had passed my peripheral vision.
There is much less to this than meets the eye.

Now you have me confused. I am the one that posted this, got it from an old Air Force friend. I flew some pretty early jets and only in the AF in Viet Nam did I ever get that good of a look at the other end of the runway.

Don, we had a ground sniffer on the nose of the B-47. When you got to then end of the runway and it smelled dirt we rotated. That plane was designed for a max gross weight of 125,000 pounds, we were flying them at 221,000 and the 509th was flying them at 225,000 with the pods.

Don,
Throughout the old British Commonwealth (sounds better than Empire, doesn’t it) we had few runways longer than 8500’, many only 7900/8100 --- the standard RAF/RAAF runway, in the late 50’s-early 70’s.
Only when we got to US did we have decent runway lengths. If my memory serves me correctly, even the original runways at London/Heathrow EGLL, were less than 9000’.
Hickham/Honolulu was paradise with about 13,000 ft.
Three places on Australia where 1 degree or 1 knot of headwind was critical in a B707, Brisbane, Perth or Cairns. Even in Sydney, the “long” runway in 1966 was only 8900, it is now shorter, due ICAO RESA requirements.
A place like RAF Muharraq, better known now as Bahrain, with a temp. of 45 degree and 8500’, got very interesting.
Until all the runways were extended for the B747, we has few operations that were 2nd segment limited, rather than runway accelerate/stop limited. In those days, FAJS, Johannesburg was our only exception, at 8000’, the JT3D-3B was a large hair dryer, only the SAA JT3D-7 gave a half way decent range/payload at those elevations.
Re.”Much less than---“, the IL-76 was operating out of Canberra quite normally, it’s just that the tower crew were quite unfamiliar with the expected performance, they were used to seeing only modern short range aircraft, and the occasional RAAF B707-320 (most were ex-QANTAS). A company operated by a good mate of mine was the local operator of the IL-76, so I know quite a bit about the detail.
