Ok, I've read several posts/replies on oils and filters both on this list as well as the rotax list, but most are 1-2 yrs old. Anybody have experience with the AV-9 oil from California Power Systems? I am using 100LL and this seems to be a good choice and reasonably priced, but would like some experienced input. The owner/builder had been using a Valvoline semi-synthetic 10-40, but I'm worried about it not doing the job for the gearbox. As far as the filter, from what I can tell from the posts there seems to be quite an argument whether or not the genuine rotax filter is worth the extra money rather than a top quality purolator/K&N/NAPA, but again would like to hear from anybody that has actually had bad results from the non-rotax filters or at least knows first hand of problems. Thanks in advance to those who take the time to respond, Paul P.

It's my understanding that the NON-rotax filters have relief pressures lower than the normal operating pressure of the 912UL. If that is in fact true, then the oil would bypass the filter completely. This is hear-say, but I couldn't bring myself to take the chance. I bit the bullet and bought rotax filters. I wish someone could test both fliter bypass pressures to see if it there is really a difference.

As for the oil, I am told that when using 100LL you need to stick with a semi synthetic oil because the full synthetic oils don't stand up to the lead as well. I use 20-W50 semi-sythetic motorcyle oil designed for four stroke engines. The havoline brand has worked well for me. Just be sure that the oil is for four stroke motorcycles because it will have the additive package to take care of the gears.

Here is a good thread on the issue. I use a NAPA because it fits and the
STP won't with carb heat. Read this:

I used AV-9 for a while. I switched to Pennzoil Motorcycl Motor oil
because, as I recall, Rotax had done some research on foaming of the various
oils and had not to that point tested the AV-9. I think I remember that the
new dipstick introduced at that time (that would give a time frame in the
Service Letters), which put the full mark a bit higher on the stick, was a
result of the foaming issue. It seems that the folks trying to have us all
live forever found something that would take a minute or two off our lives
in the antifoaming additives and made it a no no. Without the additive,
Rotax got a bit anxious and went over the recommended list again. I know of
no current info.

The Rotax Oil filter is a poor oil filter Evil or Very Mad It has a small paper element that does not have good filtering efficiency... The Purolator oil filter is the best, followed by the Mobil 1. Roger Lee did a lot of research on this, and I checked out his information and found it to be good.

As far as the bypass pressure, it is true that the Rotax bypass pressure is slightly different, the two filters I mentioned have a bypass pressure of 12 PSI while the Rotax filter is 13 PSI... One PSI is at that pressure is less than 8 % difference, in other words, the bypass pressure is not enough to make a darn bit of difference.

You can read this information on oil filters in this post, my research is posted towards the bottom of the thread.

Thanks Mike, (and Roger also for his research), based on this information I believe I'll try the Purolator filter and a 4 cycle motorcycle oil rather than having to order the rotax filter and AV-9 or Aerosport oil. Thanks again to everyone who posted an opinion, Paul P.
