I weighed my RV8A and was somewhat surprised at the results. I have a Superior O-360 normally aspirated engine, Sensenich fixed pitch propeller, and forward mounted lightweight battery. The empty weight worked out to 1080 lb with a CG at 74.8" (as measured using a datum 70" forward of the leading edge). With only the pilot (220 lb) on board, I need between 20 and 30 lb of ballast in the rear baggage compartment to be within the acceptable CG with maximum or minimum fuel respectively. Is this typical for an 8A? With a fixed pitch propeller and lightweight battery I was expecting to be not quite so nose heavy. Have others had similar results?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Craig,

One other question, was your -8A level, both fore and aft as well as left and right, when you weighed it?

Radomir,

My weights were:

Nose wheel: 321
Right wheel: 381
Left wheel: 379

I weighed the airplane level to within 0.1 degree and used a digital aircraft scale so I'm pretty confident of the weights.

If I use the distance measurements shown on one of Van's examples (the ones in your note) I come up with an empty CG of 76.4 and all is well with pilot and fuel on board. If I measure my airplane, however I get different measurements for wheel locations. When I measure my wheel locations, I get 32.25 for the nosewheel and 92.75 for the mains. The only difference is that when I made these measurements, the airplane was not level, but rather with all wheels on the ground. That might make a difference, but I didn't think it would be that much.

Craig

Craig:

Glad to hear you are so far along. I fly with an 18 lb. tool bag on my rear shelf to compensate for a heavy nose. I have a CS prop so that adds weight up front.

Good lluck !

Dale,
Thanks, that's a good reference tool. My CG is considerably different than the others.

I'd use Van's arm numbers. It looks like the arm measurements you got may not be "correct." They're significantly off, but they're also consistent which tells me there's really no problem -- just a measuring difference (eg measured to a different point on wheel etc..)
Even with the best of effort, I doubt you built all your wheels 2 inches forward than everybody else Smile It's (mostly) prepunched kit, right?

Looks like you're in good shape... sounds like first flight is just around the corner Smile
Good luck!
