Did anyone else notice this weeks EAA-e Hotline question of the week?

 Question of the Week
FAR 91.205 states the required equipment for experimental aircraft. But it has the phrase, "...with a standard category U.S. airworthiness certificate..." Does this mean that a homebuilt experimental does NOT require the items listed for day-VFR?
If the requirement is still there, please point me to where the regulations require it.

 Answer:
That is correct. An experimental aircraft that is operated day-VFR only does not have to comply with FAR 91.205. Only when flying at night or IFR does the experimental aircraft need to meet 91.205. (This is required by the aircraft's operating limitations, issued as a part of its airworthiness certificate, rather than by the regulation itself.)

I think the lesson here is that by saving $10 for a walmart compass you may
have your plane permanently excluded from night or IFR operation.

				Dirk-
..Or find out that your $2K plus D-100 with a state of the art slaved
compass is OK. I own both the D-100 compass and a very nice whiskey compass.
Considering dual backups, which would you throw out to keep your weight
down? I've already replaced nearly all my .016 skins with .020 or .025, and
beefed up the structure with all mods that made sense. Very few for
cosmetics. I have to compensate somewhere!
The cost factor went out the window years ago.
                                                                     Bill

Not permanently, you can install the necessary equipment any time
after the airworthiness certificate is issued in order to comply with
the operating limitations for night flight or even IFR flight. The Op
Lims state that the aircraft may only be flown Day VFR unless equipped
with the minimum equipment required by 91.205.

After reading all the debates on the compass issue I respect both sides although in my plane there will be a whiskey compass if nothing else to make me feel better. I'm from the old steam guage school and will be using the new Dnon in my 601. With this said three instruments will be added for my piece of mind. AS, Alt, and compass. A electrical failure is the least of my worries due to backup systems in place. But, in the unlikely event of something of a internal failure leaves nothing to work with.. This is a personal issue so to each his own. Also I will want to certify for night flight.
