I've most often seen it written TANSTAAFL (note the "A" after the first
"T" rather than an "I") ... and the meaning being "There *Ain't* No Such
Thing As A Free Lunch". While not as properly gramatical, I think this
is the way the acronym was first coined. It comes originally, if I am
not mistaken, from the Robert Heinlein classic "The Moon is a Harsh
Mistress". See http://www.jargon.net/jargonfile/t/TANSTAAFL.html for
more information if you are curious.
So much for todays science fiction history lesson.
