It’s time for me to finalize my paint scheme and so true to form last minute I came up with a number of alternate designs.
Keep in mind this plane has the James cowl. If interested please review the designs and email me off list with your favorite design # and any comments you may have.

I think the designs look great, I posted this to the whole list only to get feed back on what everyone thinks about dark color on the composites? There was some talk about the heat affecting certain brands of filler (micro). My plan is pretty basic and focuses on overall white with modest trim colors similar to what Cirrus does with their fleet.

I wouldn’t say all Cirrus designs use modest (light trim colors). This is why I have been considering color on the top side…

Hi Robin,

I like #1 or #5....here's why - I like to see paint lines flow in the same direction and give the airplane nice long curves! Personally, I'm not a big fan of the forward sweep triangle thingy on the tail, because it doesn't match any other curves on the plane anywhere and just sort of leaves you thinking...hmmm...."what's with the tail"?

Anyway, that's just my personal opinion and worth exactly what you paid for it!

Cheers,
Stein

That was basically my reply to Robin. I love all the designs,
but picked #3 because I think it's wise to avoid dark colors
on a couple areas.....one, the composites (at least the
top and real sun-facing surfaces, and two, the fuel tanks.
You may not have any problem with the glass, the paint, or
anything, but it makes sense to keep any added heat absorption
to a minimum, even on engine cowls. Maybe not a huge
critical problem, but anything that helps is worth
considering.

Hi Robin.
All are nice but I like #3 the best.
To make your life a little easier you may not want to have the steep angles that cut through the rudder. It is difficult to make those stay consistent as the rudder turns.
Especially the one that cuts through the top right corner of the vertical stabilizer.
You can make them all work though.

Very cool. This is the fun stage.

Thanks Stein. #1 is my favorite but so many people tell me to keep color
off the top of the canopy & engine? Don't really know why as Cirrus does
it.

The ones with the funny tail were last minute designs that I decided to
do something to the tail but it does not follow the theme. I would end
up changing the tail if I went with lower paint.

Again I like #1 too just trying to convince myself.

Thanks again,

Robin

Who wants to look like a Cirrus with an RV10? Still prefer the RV10 paint scheme Deems Davis (Father of the most popular RV10 Scheme) created.

My comment about a Cirrus was related to dark colors on the top side of the engine and canopy.
One has to throw some at-a-boys to the Cirrus & Columbia designers & builders. They are beautiful machines.

Yes they are...and I like their schemes..I plan on doing a basic white with multicolor intertwining ribbon design on the side, I'm painting myself, using  Jetglo and vinyl trim colors and "N" numbers. My reasoning is paint doesn't hide workmanship, and I don't EVEN want anyone to think I am cracking on their workmanship if they have cool paint jobs, I always built my -10 with resale in mind, Basecoat/Clearcoat is a bitch to repair, ever wonder why a bodyshop paints the entire part from seperation to seperation on BC/CC finishes? Because it can't be spot painted and blended. White can be customized if a buyer wants pretty easily. Vinyl can be removed and replaced fairly easily if needed and finally...I think it looks good to me...which is the only thing I care about. I remember Scott saying one time, you forget all about the fancy paint job when you sitting in the seat looking out the window. And Deems hinted to me what his paint job cost...Did I say I was painting mine? Smile Don't most of the Cirrus aircraft out there have "N" numbers that end in CD...now if you REALLY wanted to not only look like a Cirrus, you could appear to ATC as one if you were to use CD to end your tail number!!! Someone has that on their -10 don't they? Can't remember who it is though!! Oh yeah...I live in the desert...white is a cool color in 115 degree heat. Literally.

I agree that they are beautiful machines. If you get up next to one,
take a look at their door latch mechanism ..... it looks like a trunk
latch from a small car. I like it .... so much better than the crude
mechanism that comes with the kit. I'd like to make my doors latch like
that too. Anybody know where the latches come from???

Amen to what Rick says. My -10 will be out of the booth next week. I have done the vast majority of the painting myself. Very happy with the results, but it has taken me a loooong time to get it to where I feel good about it. Like setting rivets, the quality of the paint job only improves with practice and experience. But I recently bit the bullet and now have the help of a professional spray painter to do the wing top surfaces and fuse. My results and his compare favourably, but there is no way that I can achieve the consistent (outstanding) results that come from his gun. And I don't have to sell the wife and kids to pay for the paint job - all up it will have cost me well under A$2k (under US$1500).

My scheme is also Standard (high opacity) White with basic blue accents and some vinyls to add some interest. My reasoning is identical to Rick's and with the blistering heat here in Oz, dark colours on the top never factored into the equation.

cheers,
Ron
187 looking forward to the BEST Xmas present ever!

I prefer #2 or #3. In addition to not having the extra heat absorption from a dark color on top, I think a dark color on the bottom helps to hide the inevitable belly grime. I had an all-white Warrior and man I spent a lot of time degreasing the underside of that plane.

Just my $.02
