List: The new gas cans here in California require a special nozzle that
is supposed to seal better and thus prevent gasoline vapors from
escaping into the air. In my opinion they are such a pain in the a__
that you end up spilling small amounts gasoline almost every time you
 use them. However I digress.

Today while adding fuel to my 701, the plastic nozzle fell off the
faucet on the end of the can and of course dropped straight into my fuel
tank. This meant I now had a 12" piece of plastic submerged somewhere
in my tank free to roam around and create havoc. I could hear it
snuggled up in the far corner of my tank giggling and snorting. Of
course there is no way to see into that portion of the tank so I got a
piece of wire and pushed it into the tank in the vain hope of sweeping
it closer where I could see it. Each time I swept the wire towards the
back of the tank, I could feel the nozzle jump over the wire and of
course there was that constant giggle. It did not take me long to
figure out that blindly waving a wire around inside the tank probably
was not going to give me positive results.

Since the nozzle had somehow moved to the back of the tank (the back
being lower than the front), I decided to try lowering the front of the
airplane in the hope that gravity would exert its influence on my
wayward 12 inches. In order to bring my plane into my shop I raise the
wheels and put them in car dollies so I can shoehorn the plane thru the
roll up door. This meant in order to lower the front of the plane, I
just had to remove the front dolly and this would lower the front of the
plane. Well that was fine but it didn't really get it low enough where
gravity would have a big enough influence on my reluctant nozzle. I
then let the air out of the tire (otherwise known as passing gas) and
dropped the nose another 4 inches.

I next went to the back of the plane and shook my tail for a couple of
minutes. On return to the front of the plane, I climbed the ladder and
peered into the right wing tank. There right under the filler cap was
the missing plastic nozzle. Using the wire, I carefully lifted the
nozzle, (balanced on the wire) high enough where I could grab the
plastic with a pair of needle nose pliers and remove it from the tank.
Whew! Who would have thought that simply pouring gas into the tank
could be such an arduous affair. Maybe I will buy that expensive Goat
 Throat fuel pump after all.

PS - This is a true story so be careful out there. You never know when
you might have to pass gas, wiggle your tail and use your dolly to help
 retrieve your nozzle.

Another option is the "super siphon" from Lockwood. They are listed in the
catalog for about $8.00. Of course, one could transfer from the 5 gal
container to a 3 gal container to have more control on the high wings.
