I don't know how well everyone's nose wheel/axle is working but Grove has a
nice setup for the RV-10 as well as other models. I installed their nose
wheel kit on my RV-6A and it is much better than the stock configuration. I
can move the plane much easier and it lands better, without shimmy. I really
don't like the Matco bearing configuration - the Grove has a standard
bearing/seal like the main wheels. Their kits include wheel and axle
hardware:

Ahhhh. A blatant commercial plug......
But a seemingly good one.
I had not heard of this as a problem (shimmy) but please elaborate more.
What does the Grove unit do better than the stock Vans setup? Does it eliminate the axle bolt which seems kind of rinky-dink and a weak link?

I did something like this on my stock RV-8A nose gear by using a left over
piece of steel aileron connecting rod tubing slid over the bearing bolt on
the inside of the wheel. I trimmed the tubing until it provided a good fit
on the bearings with the nut on the bearing bolt tighten. This ended my
nose gear shimmy problem. I'll do the same on the RV-10.

Oh, I didn't intend my message to be a commercial plug. I'm not connected
with Grove in any way, I just think their wheel and bearing solution is the
correct way to build it. Their nose wheel is made like the main gear
wheels - there isn't any rubber seal on the bearing. The bearings are
installed with a felt dust seal and a snap ring. They also supply an axle
and spacers so that you tighten the axle to preload the bearings like you do
on a car. The spacers have a pin that you install in the yoke which prevents
them from moving. My Matco wheel would not spin by itself when I spun it
with the nose wheel held off the ground. I installed the Grove wheel and it
continued to spin freely after turning it by hand. I also noticed that my
plane was easier to move when I push it into the hangar. There is a lot of
talk on Van's Airforce website forums about this wheel on the 2-seat RV's.
I've just wondered why it seems no one is using the Grove wheel on the
RV-10. I think it would correct the problems with the spacers moving around
with the Matco wheel.
Note: the shimmy I referred to is on an RV-6A; RV-10's don't do that as far
as I've seen.
