Does anyone have good pictures showing what this is? Some have commented that it is ugly, but the best I can tell from the poor pictures on the Zenith site is that it has a removable bar in the front and a cradle in the back that is also removable. From the comments I've read I don't want it for common storage, but for ground transport.
I helped my buddy trailer his Challenger to the airport a few months ago. I'll tell ya that was a long slow trip worrying about the wings tied down, ad padded with every cushion and pillow from the house. Now ft his wings had folded it would not have been a big deal at all.
I started the wing rib router cutting template yesterday and so I'm about to the point of deciding and the folding wing.

Here is a picture of someone that is actively using the folding 701 option to his advantage:

Jon, that sure is a nice hangar (portable) for the yellow 701 on floats!
Looks like there may be a sufficient number of people available to do the fold/un-fold operation.
Sure hope I didn't start the flames.
There was a boatload of helpers!
Note below the dockworkers... but I guess they didnt do the folding. I will try to followup with a story about the effort required to fold/unfold from this guy that has personal experience... I am quite curious also. This 701 pilot is from New Caledonia... now I had to get out my globe to locate that country! The newsletter went to the printer today so by Turkey-day weekend they should be heading out the door... and this issue will include a DVD of contributed video segments from 601/701/801 builders and pilots ! Even I am excited!

Kevin,
Here are some pics of the folding wing option.
Included:
4130 large tube with smaller tubes on either end that telescope out.
The telescoping ends attach into shown brackets that rivet into the lower spar cap.
This assembly hangs below the cabin frame from 2 tabs that didn't quite line up.
Quick disconnects for fuel lines. You will have to defuel tanks.
A pattern on paper to trace onto plywood for a cradle that supports ends of wings.
Click on link and then select folding wings section:
http://www.701builder.com/00Wingshome.htm
Steps
Defuel wing tanks.
Support wings on end with stands.
Remove front and back wing attach bolts on both wings
Remove lower front and back strut bolts on both sides.
Disconnect Flaperons. They will flop around and need to be supported some way.
Disconnect fuel lines, Electrical connections and pitot.
Pull wing outward and up to clear strut attach.
Twist and fold back and lay on wooden cradle resting on tail.
I did not keep the option, was not a real need for me to fold them. It might be nice to have for storage.

Nice plane!
Thanks for the pics this helps a lot when I look at the pics at the Zenith site.
So does that telescoping bar stay attached to the cabin front frame all the time?
What is the aluminum sheet labeled "door gusset" ?
I agree that it seems too cumbersome for common use, but that is not why I'm interested in it. People have commented about how ugly is is and I could not figure out what they were talking about. But if that bar stays in place maybe thats what they are referring to?

Kevin,
Yes that telescoping piece is attached to the cabin frame all the time even with the wings open.
That was the main drawback for me, it sticks out of the door gusset along the bottom of the wing causing drag and is very visable.
You could make some fairings to hide them.
With the wings folded the root of the wings hang from this piece which attaches to the top of the cabin frame with 2 tabs(rivets).
It would be better to weld these tabs to the cabin frame. Mine did not line up very well(see pics).
The door gusset is a pain to install without this option, it would be more challenging with that tube there. They give you the aluminum
to close up the larger hole you will have to make in the door gusset to get it to look good.
The tabs or brackets that attach the telescoping piece to the wings will rivet to the lower spar cap. With the wings folded their full wieght(almost, tips are on cradle)
is on these tabs sideways and the not so very robust lower cap. If you are moving the aircraft alot the cap will take some unusual stresses that
could cause cracks. Of course, just folding the wings and storing the aircraft should not be a problem.
If the telescoping bar could be installed somehow that it could be removed when he wings are bolted in place(unscrewed at both tabs and slid out the side) and the brackets
removed from the wings(using bolts and nutplates) ugly looks would go away. If you made one hole extra large on one door gusset then the telescoping piece could
slide out from one side, and then access panels made to cover up these holes.
Anyway if you can get this mod from the person on the list for shipping, then go for it. I was just not motivated enough to go off on another
tangent away from the goal of getting this thing in the air, which I still have not reached yet. The option is expensive and I traded it in for aux tanks.
Still building and getting close, a recent divorce has slowed building to a crawl, but I'm very happy I got my plane out of it intact.
Just have to do control cables, access panel for oil in cowl, final inspection, first flight.
I will update the site soon, it's stuck at Mar 2008 when I moved it to the airport.
Keep sighning the guestbook!

Thanks for the input, that is really what I needed. I think I'll pass on the folding wing. I really don't plan on trailering it much anyway., just seemed like a good idea. Well I guess I'm set to start making wings then.
Thanks again!
