On my trip I had a gear up bulb not come on (nose wheel) Tried changing bulbs..no change. Flew by a tower and confirmed it wasn't hanging down. So, now I need to know where the relay switch is for the up indication and how to test it on the ground, thanks. Just one of a bizillion questions that arose on this cross country.

The microswitches for the gear lights are on the drag link (DOWN light) and the uplock (parrot hook) assembly (UP light). The problem may not be the UP microswitch on the uplock assembly. It could be the lever mechanism itself binding internally within the uplock assembly. There is an arm that engages and disengages the microswitch. When the nose gear (or the mains for that matter) is up and locked into the parrot hook, the arm on the assembly that engages and disengages the microswitch will be disengaged from the microswitch. Sometimes the assembly mechanism has not been properly serviced over the years and the arm mechanism hangs up and will not disengage the microswitch. If the airplane has ever been landed gear up, the uplock assembly mechanism can be bent slightly causing the parrot hook mechanical lock mechanism not to lock and thus not allow the arm to disengage from the microswitch.
Push up on the parrot hook and lock it in place. To release the parrot hook, note the spring in front of the hook and push up on the lever on the end of the spring opposite the parrot hook. If it doesn't lock in place when you push up on the parrot hook, the mechanism is not working correctly. If it does lock in place, watch the arm that engages the microswitch and see if it disengages the microswitch. These microswitches have a very distinctive "click" when then engage and disengage. If the arm moves away from the microswitch, then push the button on the microswitch to hear the "click" in both directions. While doing this, have someone in the cockpit turn the BATTERY switch on and the GEAR light toggle switch on the left side console. See if the nose gear light goes on and off when depressing and releasing the microswitch manually. If it doesn't go on and off, it is possible the microswitch could be bad. But I would use an ohm meter and check the continuity before replacing the switch. Especially if you here the distinctive "click". It could also be a bad bulb socket/wiring on the instrument panel.
Many times these socket rotate when the lense is removed. If rotated too many times or too far in one direction, the brittle Russian wires can break off at the back of the socket. Bingo....no light at all.
Hopefully this will help you diagnose the problem.

Bill,I have a no "nose up" indication as well. Like Dennis suggested rule out the electrical part of it by pushing on the microswitch button (it will click) while someone is looking at your cockpit gear lights. The nose red(up) light will most likely come on which means that the adjustable thumbscrew/hammer is not travelling far enough with the uplock to push the microswitch in. I tried adjusting that and ruled out the uplock and I found with mine that the entire crossbrace that the microswitch is attached to is bent upwards just enough to be "out of reach" so to speak of the thumbscrew. Not sure if the a/c had a gear up or it is just from the NLG slamming up over the years without air restrictors. I am going to shim the assembly with a washer or two to close that gap and I am sure that will fix it. I think that this is not that uncommon with the nose gear. Better to have with "up" indications than "down" anyday. Good luck.Hank GibsonCJJacksonville, FL

Shouldn't the light come on when the indicator lamp test button (just below mag switch) is pushed??
