I just installed and tested out my new teardrop shaped strut covering on my 701... The improved performance was really something! The covers, which weighed-in at about 8-lbs, increased the speed of the plane between 6 and 8-mph and improved the vertical performance. I was expecting only a 3 or 4-mph improvement, so this was a pleasant surprise.
The covers were made of .025” 6061-t6 sheet cut to 8-1/2” strips and bent over the struts. They are strong enough to use to push the plane without deforming. I don’t have the tools to bend long strips so I started with an 801 strut cover kit from Zenith and had the width of the pieces cut down to 8-1/2”and re-trimmed. It was easy to put them on but took two people to bend them over the struts and cleco them down. They are held rigidly in place by the jury strut bolts.
I recommend this 701 modification to anyone who wants to improve performance, reduce fuel costs, and add a little strength to their struts. If anyone wants pics, pls request them by email directly to me.
Les
