Europa-philes,
To those, in the UK, interested in installing the "air-scoop-behind-coolant-radiator" type of cabin heater (a la Bud Yerly / Dave Andersen / Paul McAllister / Mike Parkin), the UK LAA requires steel, firewall-shut-off-valve(s), to reduce the risk of fire / smoke ingress into the cabin.
Mike Parkin devised a very elegant, stainless steel daisy wheel valve (See <Cabin Heat MP.jpg, attached), which gained LAA approval as part of his aircraft-specific installation. However, it was expensive (in time or money) to produce, especially as a one-off.
I have simplified Mike's design slightly and gained the LAA's (informal) approval that it is acceptable.
The pertinent design aspects are: (Rough sketch attached - <Firewall Shut off valve.pdf>).
- Laser cut from 1.5 mm stainless steel
- Sized to match the Aircraft Spruce aluminium flanges for 2-inch Scat hose.
- Use of sleeves (2-3 mm long) under the heads of two of the mounting bolts, as the "end stops" for the rotating wheel.
- A 1.5 mm overlap at each edge of the "petals" when the valve is closed.
- The "valves" are opened and closed by Bowden cable.
The method of installing is illustrated in the Mike Parkin drawing <Cabin Heat MP.jpg>
Producing a batch of the valves makes them semi-affordable. To that end I've got a quote from a local fabrication shop with a laser cutting facility. By producing at least a dozen, they will charge UK Pounds 25.30 PER valve (including Tax).
Soooo....
If you are interested, please email me, or "Reply" to this email and let me know if you want one or two of the valves.
Please Note:
This is not an entrepreneurial activity, my incentive is to share the laser cutting set-up cost across a number of sets of the valves.
This is NOT a kit of parts, you will need to source the hose flange(s), cable(s), hose, nuts & bolts, etc, separately).
Postage will be extra, at cost.
Regards,
