Just in case you haven't heard, two light aircraft collided in mid air over
Sydney yesterday. One aircraft was a Cessna and the other a Liberty. From
the very limited screening of the Liberty on TV, it seems it was relatively
undamaged having landed safely. It appears the Liberty cut through the rear
of the fuselage of the Cessna dislodging the tailplane with inevitable
consequences. All this subject to correction - source of information TV
only at this stage.
On a more pleasant note, I spoke to a chap at the service station this
afternoon when I noted he was transporting a gyrocopter on the back of his
Toyota utility.
He was on his way home after having the aircraft completely serviced and he
told me that his 912 ULS engine has done 5200 hrs and it has just been
fitted with a new set of rings. If the figure is accurate, I think that is
an incredibly life given he is a professional cattle musterer flying low in
hot, dusty conditions etc. Is this not testimony to the longevity of the
little Rotax engines? Previous to this, I have heard of another 912S doing
3500 hrs virtually untouched under similar conditions.
