After finding out that I am too weak and puny to pull my 10 back in
the hanger by myself, I'm in the market for a powered tow bar or
winch. Any recommendations?

This is the one I have...
http://www.powertow.com/12V.html
Works great, I have a slight up hill into the hanger and a lip in the
hanger. Doesn't fit right with the fairing on the nose wheel, so I have a
little bit of work to do on it to make it work a little better.

I purchased a cool (used) EZGO dump bed golf cart (gas model) used for
golf course maintenance work. It has a towing hook up on both the front
& rear of the frame. I plan to use that to move my -10. Because there is
a hook up in front I can look at the plane as I move it around. I will
have to fabricate the tow mechanism but that should not be an issue. For
about the same price as the prebuilt ones I also have an airport get
around cart and a good training cart to teach my daughter how to drive.

Sheldon,
I've been considering the same thing. I have an incline, and my hangar
faces in a direction that causes me to have about .5-1" of ice in front
of my hangar lots of times in the winter. I barely made it in alone
last weekend. So I was thinking something like this with a winter
studded tire would help.

They're here in-state, besides...
I did consider pulling it in tail first with a winch, and even have
a mount on the floor where I could attach it. But, I just don't like
the idea of pulling on that tail eyelet at the angle it would take to
pull it in. That bulkhead would hold up to a lot of down force, but I'm
not sure how many pounds of rearward pull it can take. I was thinking
of calling Van's on it. If I just had a way to pull about 15' of
cable in with a winch, a pushbutton operated winch would be dirt
cheap and work perfectly for me, and then I wouldn't even have to
worry about studded tires. Let me know what you dig up.

Another inexpensive option is to buy a used riding mower and use it as a
tug. You can get them cheap because you don't need one that actually mows.
I tried chains on my tug in MN and found out that it tears up the cement
after a years worth of use. I went back to no chains.

Us Grumman drivers have the same problem ..... and the solution is to
loop a rope around the steps to make a bridle and tow with a winch. An
electric boat winch works real good ..... or even a Harbor Freight winch.

I have the Powertow 12 Volt model as well. I worked with the folks at
Powertow and they came up with a modified set of extenders that look
like they are going to work fine with the nose gear fairing. However,
I won't know for sure until it gets back from the paint shop and I
get it put back together. Powertow folks have been very good to work
with. It is an expensive piece of equipment, but I am very pleased
with it. I used it quite a bit during my phase 1.

I slipped and fell last week trying to push my C-152 into the hanger by myself after the the hanger rows were plowed. It took several trys (and salt) before I was finaly able to get it in,,,, no one was around (New Years Day) to ask for help. Though its a ways off before my RV-10 is flying, I am fabricating my own electric tug for under $350 and I will modify the nose wheel hook-up with various adapters at that time. Everything but the steel is coming from here: http://www.surpluscenter.com/ one of my favorite on-line surplus stores.

We made ours from a Roto Tiller, removed the tiller, added the attach to the plane will move the hangar if you have to.

If you are so inclined to make your own (you built an airplane after all ) the April 2005 Kitplanes had an article on a DIY powered tow bar made from various salvaged parts.

Cool, if you have any idea of what motor and other parts you
plan to use, I'd love to see it. I've been thinking of
breaking out the welder and giving it a shot myself too.
I figure if I can do it for 1/2 price I'd be perfectly happy.

For our spam can planes we use an electric winch mounted to the back
wall of the hangar.

That might work, but with the castering nosewheel on the -10, it can
get really hard to control. If you had a remote that you could turn
the winch on and off with, then used a normal towbar to stear from the
front, that would probably work fine.
