				I have a 70" 3 blade WD on 912ul/701. I find it's a good combination needing
8-12' of pitch depending on desired performance. As discussed I found the
tips were too close to the ground so I added a 4" plug between the nose fork
and the strut. Works fine and also reduces the height of the tail to clear
the top of doors. Real help on skis.
 For info.

				Hi Carl,

I’ve been thinking of adding a spacer/plug to the front strut to get more prop ground clearance as you have done. I would love to see a picture or two of yours to see how it turned out.

 Thanks

 Rick

				Carl:

I got a nice response from Michael Heintz yesterday about the same
subject. I will copy it immediately below:

 "Hi Stan,

Sounds like you are getting ready for some serious fun with your CH 701!

The nose wheel fork is indeed an item manufactured on special order by
Zenith Aircraft. When you call Zenith to discuss details, you should
probably ask to speak with Roger who knows all about these things...

Note that the extended fork is best if you are considering a larger-
than normal nose wheel. If you plan on using the wheel supplied in the
kit, but need additional prop clearance, it is quite common to insert
a spacer between the standard fork and the nose gear strut. I have
seen these up to 1.5" tall; made of either aluminum (with lightening
holes) or hardwood. As a general rule of thumb, we try to have at
least 9" of clearance, a bit more if the bungee is older/looser...

 Hope this helps!

 Best regards,
 Michael Heintz
 Quality Sport Planes"

I also would like to see a picture of your spacer/plug for the front
strut as my current prop only allows about 8" of ground clearance.

				Rick,

In 1998 when I built my hanger, I used old tail height figures from Zenith. Turned out the rudder would hit the roof joist. I called ZAC and asked if I could put a 2" spacer between the fork and the nose gear strut. Answer was yes. I now sit a slightly positve angle of attack on the ground and when taking off there is no ptich up tnendency as when you rotate form an negative AOA to a positive AOA. Which I saw when I flew ZAC's 701.
You can see a pix at www.geocities.com/cffd66 look under "Airplane" then " Ready for Inspection". I just used 8 long bolts through the solid block.

Chuck what height were you able to get the SP version tail height down to using the 2" spacer? I wouldn't need to modify the shed... I mean hanger as much, if I could fit the 701 in an 8 foot tall door.

				Hello Kevin,

If you install a little roller in the rear tie down ring, you can roll the airplane around the hangar, just check the height of the leading edges and probably the propeller (cant remember what is higher).

I put my 701 in that position outside my hangar to wash and wax the wings, empenage and the rear top fuselage. I also use a piece of wood about 1"l so the rudder will not touch the floor.
If the airplane is corect balanced will stay there, just in case I add a 10 lbs sac in the center of the empenage, if I have to leave it unatended.

Just push down gently on the rear fuselage, near the stabilizer with the arm.

  Saludos
  Gary Gower

				Kevin,

My block is a solid block of aluminum 2" high. Extending the nose gear 2 inches lowered the tail about 6 inches. With my Jab 2200 and batteries on the fire wall, my cg was still towards the back so the solid aluminum helped the cg a teeny bit.

Unfortunately I only flew-off the first 25 hrs on wheel back in 95. My a/c
has been on amphibs since and the only picture I can find of the nosewheel
strut extension is not great. It was taken after the first test flight and
you can see the top joint but the top of the nose fork is in the shadows.
I scratch built so I just made two extra strut plates, welded them to a 4"
piece of cromemoly (Same as the strut) and bolted it between the strut and
 the fork.
For those who have a problem with door clearance I include a picture of my
a/c on floats with a longer nose strut to clear a 9' door. You can see that
the a/c sit on the ground with a 5' positive angle. (That's the thrust,
cabin tube line). The wing has a +2.5' angle of incidence so rolling with
all three wheels on the ground I have +7.5' angle of attack. .
The only negative with this is you must make sure you get the nose up to
above 10' on landing so you don't land nose wheel first and get into a
porpoise. That should not be a problem for the slated 701
 Hope this helps
 Carl
