Hey All,
I was considering using a high density poly foam, (gray in color) to do the initial build up of the seats instead of the blue foam we built the plane with. I am looking at 4 inch stuff in the bottom and some 4 inch for the wedge that blends into the same plane as the headrest to get the desired 70 degree recline. Actually near the thigh supports it will need to be 5 inches thick. But I guess what I am asking, will a hard high density foam be desirable over the even harder and rigid blue stuff? I was thinking of maybe 1 or 2 inches of the medium polyurethane for the final toppers. Thoughts?

Troy, I made myself seat-bottoms of blue foam, but soon found out , that only several layers of seat-cushions made sense.
It is the only way to adjust the seats for different sized occupants. Mine is a classic mono, and I had a friend, who is 6'2" and admits to 235 lb, up for a 55 min. flight. He was not very comfortable sitting on a hard bottom with no back-cushion, but it was
his idea. My upholstery has 1/4 " foam under the fabric everywhere.Three cushions of different thickness give lots of options.
One layer is 1" temper-foam. The rest should also not be too soft.Even for the back, two 1" cushions are better than one 2" one.

A thin bean bag is the most comfortable. It also crushes and absorbs
impact energy in a heavy landing and adjusts to any shape of butt to
give even pressure all over, the key to comfort.
imho of course. In my case comfort is more important than appearance Wink

You might want to check out Hi-Tech Foams. These are the folks usually seen at the air shows that make configurations for most kits. They're a bit pricey but may be worth it for the comfort. US$259 for the Europa configuration, both seats.

Dan,

I can't seem to get their website to work. It's not your link. I have
them in my favorites with the same results. I get the website, but lots
of errors and very limited movement page to page. Might be something
temporary. I would'nt mind an easy airplane solution (like let them do
it) about now. Isn't that $259 just for the foam: no upholsetry.

$259 sounds like a good deal.
Using 1" of blue & 1" of green Confor foam, 16 x 18, for the seats, and 1" of uphostery foam for the back (rolled around a core of blue and green cut-offs for lumbar support)...plus assorted uphostery foam wedges...I think I spent close to $300. I allowed the seat foam to cantilever forward of the thigh support for additional thigh support for my long legs. Seat backs are separate, and (temporarily) supported by foam blocks in photo.
That Confor foam is really great stuff...very comfortable.

Hi Troy

We ordered seat cushions from Europa. Needed to make a rear seat support out of blue foam and balsa. The idea of the balsa is when we install Teleflex long wing airbrake cables, can hog out blue foam and the balsa should be able to cantelever load more "thinly" than can blue foam. The seat base is blue foam with plywood covering. Idea is that "stuff" is going to be below the plywood and blue foam is easy to cut pockets in.

I am happy with Factory seats after fabricating lumbar insert, comfort is good, lumbar support is good. There are four easy configurations, no base insert just seat base, a 1" insert, a 2" insert, and both the 1" and 2" insert. I am 68" tall and with 1" insert I am happy. Wayne is happy with 2" insert.

We purchased pump up lumbar support, not very nice valve arrangement. After fooling with them and both failing, can custom adjust lumbar support very easily with wedges of cushy foam if need b

I like the idea Graham Singleton has of using a Bean Bag or Styrofoam peanut bag and will try both of them.

I am pretty sure Europa would know dimensions needed for seat base and back after having to redo mine, but you would be better off reminding them what is needed.

I have most information you need documented at:

Fred

I cut my headrest foam pieces yesterday as fill in job. I don't have ply or hinges yet.

The reason for writing is just to say that I have gone quite the opposite way to your plush seating!
My seats are formed with 4 plies of BID formed on a standard plastic chair used in public halls. These are suspended on a pair of side pieces of ply with an array of holes to take shoot bolts on the bottom front edge of the seat. The rear of the seat is supended on a seat belt that will have to go under your headrest hinge to the restraint point in addition to the seat belt ends.
