That is amazing.
I can think of all kinds of small part off a TC that can be built again.
Door Handles?
Control Wheels?

Hi Folks,
Mr. Leno may have given a over simplification on this process.
We used technology very similar to this to design piston domes during the last 10 or so years that I was at Ross Racing Pistons. The difference was that we used Giddings & Lewis coordinate measuring machines which actually used a Ruby stylus to touch the part that was to be duplicated (or reverse engineered) in hundreds of different spots. These spots were digitized, and downloaded to a CAD (computer aided design) program, processed, and then downloaded to a CNC (computer numerical control) program which ran the FADAL vertical machining centers. The difference between the system that Jay Leno has, is that the scanning is done without actually touching the part that is to be duplicated, which appears would save about thirty minutes scanning time on a small, relatively simple part. This scanning on the G & L machines does not require that the operator be at the machine all of the time so you are saving machine time and not operator and machine time.
To make a one off part you still must make the holding fixture for the part blank, install the proper cutting tools, (drills, end mills, groove cutters, ball end mills and so fourth) into the CNC mill/and or lathe. Our FADAL machines held about 15 to 20 tools, and since we were a one product company and had eight of them on the floor, tool changing was not generally an issue. However, if you only wanted to make one of something it would be.
It is still quicker/better/easier to do some secondary operations on a $ 250.00 drill press or an old Bridgeport vertical mill.
