Stirring up an old thread here.

I will have to replace my fuel lines due to aging sometime over the next few months, so I have started thinking about fuel-systems.

My G-BWON (which I bought in december 2008 ) currently only has a sight-gauge behind the filler-neck, and I know for a fact that this thing is not to be trusted!
No fuel sender is installed either, so effectively there is only one action that I can fully trust today: fill up the tank until the very edge of the filler-neck to know for sure how much fuel is onboard.

I most certainly:
(1) will install a fuel flow computer (FC10) with 2 FloScan 201B6 transducers
(2) want a reliable inflight-indication of fuel available

FYI: Andy Draper today informed me that the LAA is working on a standard mod for the fuel flow computer installation in Europas, and will be published on their website 'in next few weeks max'

My questions to the list are related to the second point above:

(A) The links to images that show Tony K's solution are no longer working; anybody willing to post some images so I can have a look what this pressure-sensor solution is all about? I saw Tony's email that a new version is available, the fact that this solution remains work in process is fantastic!
Tony, perhaps you can share your knowledge about the device with me, along with pros/cons? If so, please send me an email.

(B) Another option would be to install a reed-type float sender (I don't want other types), but I am pretty sure I won't be the only one not being eager to cut up the headrest et all.
I saw WEC's solution, where a float was installed in a standpipe/sight gauge. Not having seen this solution before, this solution resembles one of the ideas that crossed my mind lately.
Is there anybody who can tell me the pros/cons of this solution, or possibly share experience with this or similar solution?

Feedback for my system from existing users has been very positive and
installation is relatively easy.

It does require insertion of the pressure sensor into the fuel sight
gauge pipe and a rerouting of the sight gauge vent to ensure that the
vent outlet and the sensor air pressure side are at the same ambient
pressure.

I don't make a fully assembled version or kit of parts available so if
you do want to use one you either have to be able to build an electronic
circuit or find someone who does.

It requires a PC to perform the calibration though this process is quite
simple.

As an ongoing maintenance check I am recommending that the pipe on the
air side of the pressure sensor is made out of clear hose and that this
should be examined at 25 hour intervals or at annual maintenance
whichever comes sooner for presence of fuel droplets. Any fuel droplets
here indicate a failure within the pressure sensor seal and will
necessitate replacement of the pressure sensor. The sensor recommended
has shown itself to be good for Avgas and mogas so far but with various
fuel mixtures now turning up around the world this check is worth
implementing.

I will post the new design on my website soon now that the new chipset
is in production.

Regards

Tony

You don't have to cut the headrest for this. In fact, the best place is
between the headrests. I have the materials available if you want to do
this: fold back the upholstery, use a hole-drill to drill a hole next to
the headrest, drill a smaller hole in the tank, via the opening install
a few anchor nuts in the tank (ty them with a small wire to your wrist
so they can't fall accidently into the tank during the installation),
install the fuel sensor, and make a hatch that covers the opening. This
can be done with anchor-nuts and nearly flush AN525 screws as well.
Depending on the fuel sensor, it is possible to cover the opening
without a "bulge". Put your upholstery back, and you won't notice that
anything ever happened there. I can show you how it can be done and
offer some assistance as well.

I think this is a good solution, because it doesn't require any
additional hoses to be installed (saves later maintenance and reduces
leakage risks), and you have an opening in the tank for
inspection/cleaning purposes. (I think that if I bought a used Europa, I
would very much like to inspect the inside of the tank, to be sure that
no sludge/particles has been built up during the previous years. You
don't know what is lurking inside, waiting for a particular brand of
Mogas with ethanol to dissolve and finds its way to the soon to be
blocked fuel filter)

The bad news of course is that you have to drain the tank first, but you
have to do that already for the rest of your fuel plumbing work anyway.
