				All Lightning / Esqual flyers,
I am collecting some "marketing data" for the new LS-1 Lightning that might be helpful to show potential SLSA and ELSA customers that the Lightning is not a new development, but a light sport airplane that was based on the very successful EAB Lightning and the Esqual before that. So all you Lightning and Esqual owners, past and current, please help the effort by sending me how much flying time is now on your aircraft. Actually, if you anticipate flying a lot between now and Sun N Fun, add that estimated time to the total you send me. And just to keep things from getting confusing, please also send your N Number (or country registration) along with the type (Lightning or Esqual) and total hours of flying time.
I will provide all of you the results of this poll when (and if) I get good feedback. And you get to be part of the overall marketing plan for the new LS-1 Lightning. Thanks in advance.
  Buz

				Hi Linda,
Thanks for the update on the hours. The weather has been pretty fickle. I think I have made seven or eight flights since arriving l

				Gary,

Great looking aircraft. Is it built to fit Light Sport? I see it has the winglets (if that is the proper term).

I have looked at the Lightning for a number of years, but did not like the early LSA configuration. Now that it can be built "full dress", my wife and I have decided to build one.

We are going to visit with Greg Hobbs in early May in order to get a closer look. Looking forward to it.

Do you keep your aircraft near Marana, AZ?

  Mike Allen

				<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]-->  Greetings Mike

The Lightning is a very good looking airplane. People comment on how good it looks everywhere I fly. For example, yesterday I flew to Williams-Gateway Airport. The attendant on the apron stopped and we talked for several minutes about how streamlined it was. Then, two retired airline pilots asked about it and commented on how much they liked it. These two guys just landed with a private jet! If I were a salesman, I could make some extra money.

I did not build my Lightning specifically for Light Sport. However, as you know, they can be built that way.

I recommend the winglets. They add to the surface area of the wings and I believe they shorten the take off roll, the landing roll, lessen the stall speed and create more lift. Besides, they look really cool!

If you build a Lightning, I don't think you will regret it. Knowing that nothing is perfect, I believe the Lightning is a good value for a new airplane, especially if you compare it to all other "Factory built" or "Kit" aircraft available. If you do your research, you will discover that prices for LSA aircraft are quite high. Some exceeding $125,000.00! You could buy a really nice used GA airplane for that.

The Lightning is a fast, slippery, comfortable airplane that handles pretty well. It is not perfect but nothing is. It does have a quirk that I would like to see resolved..... gear leg shimmy. It is very annoying. At times, it rattles the entire airplane. That can't be good for the structure.

I know Greg Hobbs. I think he is a good, honest man. Be sure you take the "Transition Training".

Yes, I keep my plane at Marana Airport. The first two LSA airplanes I built, I kept under the shade ports at Marana, but my Lightning has to be in a hanger, though it is much more costly. I've discovered that people are curious and like to touch. Once, I caught a man and woman trying to climb into my last airplane. I can't allow that with the Lightning.

Anyway, good luck with your decision. I hope to see you at the airport.

  Happy flying.

  Gary Pennington

				Gary,

  Thanks for the input.

RVs apparently have the same issue (nose wheel shimmy). An apparent problem with free castering nose wheels. All though this problem is probably partially avoidable through proper flight techniques, the occasional occurrence is worth all of the other benefits of the aircraft. This is where that all important "Transition Training", as you have recommended, will come in to play for me.

Arion is undoubtedly working on the problem. Hopefully it will be resolved soon.

  Thanks again,
  Mike

Ps. I'll drop you a note when we know the exact date of our visit. My wife and I would appreciate meeting you.
