I was minding my own business trying to comply with the Rotax Alert Service
Bulletins ASB-912-051 / ASB-914-034 . Well I took the magnetic Plug out and
oil started pouring out all over everything. Naturally I have some
questions; Should I have expected oil to come out? Did I remove the wrong
plug? Is the engine routed the correct way? I have over 40 hours and things
seem to be fine, I expected to see metal shavings on the magnetic plug but
when the oil started pouring out I quickly put it back in.

David,

Yes some oil came out when I removed the plug,. But I had time to
examine it, and asked my buddy to cover the hole with his thumb while I
was cleaning it !

I spoke with the guys at Lockwood about this and they said they check the plug at every other oil change, when the oil is all drained out. This works, but it still may drip a little.

Thanks guys, I was under the impression that I would be looking at something
that was collecting shavings in a dry part of the gear box. I'm changing my
oil this week and I'll do it once most of the oil is drained out.

am hijacking thread...i tried to remove this plug at last oil change and found it to be seized tight= striped out torx= not going to be removed without drilling. and re-tap. i was thinking of attaching a earth magnet to oil filter. this would do the same job??? when i surgical inspect the filter any problems should show up here or do i need to remove this plug to clean off. my thoughts are it would only collect as much as would stick to the original plug and hold it. then rest would collect at filter. any advice would be appreciated

Once you get that old Torx plug out, get one of the new style magnetic plugs. There is a new design of this plug, that came out last year. It has a nice 16mm(?) Hex head. No more Torx head to be stripped.

Magnetic plug removal.

First make sure you tap the #40 Torx into place to make sure it is seated all the way in other wise it will strip. Once done have someone apply a fair amount of torque to the magnetic plug and while they are doing this take a rod about 8"-10" long and set the tip of the rod on the edge of the plug. Grab a hammer and tap the rod smartly once or twice and the plug comes right out. This is usually a first time issue and when you put it back in it is supposed to be torqued to 200 in/lbs. It should then be safety wired. No other fancy removal ideas needed. This works every time without fail. This plug is to be checked every 50 hrs during the oil change or 25 hrs. if you use 100LL. Some oil does run out the hole so keep a rag handy. There is less oil if you do this while the oil is drained. Under no circumstances rotate your prop while the oil id drained or you will be purging the oil system for sure.
They do make the new hexhead version of this plug. It is about $45-$50

For some folks, if it has what looks like six points on an internal
wrenching fastener, they automatically assume it is an Allen socket
and screw it up with the wrong tool.

On our RANS S6 first oil change after purchasing last Septemeber, our
Torx plug had been stripped badly. We bought the newer style hex head
mag plug and then used a screw extractor to get out the old one during
next oil change. Expensive price for a little mag plug but worth the
piece of mind of never having the hassle again.

thanks guys but the tork is already stripped. not so sure it wasn't bad bfore i started. did tap into bottom befor applying rotation. i should only be able to drill part way in before hitting magnet(should be noticable)then use easyout.. plus the shock treatment hopfully will do it. will get new plug in hand bfore i attempt. thanks again and will keep advised.
