Richard,

Go down to your local hardware shop, in the plumbing division, and obtain 2 

x 50mm plastic 'end plugs' (screw on plug with rubber washers). Fit them 

into the top of your stabilator with centre being the pin, and set below the 

curved surface. When finishing the surface build up with flox to contour the 

plug with the surface. I then cut down an old Subaru key I had to make two 

points and drilled holes in the screw top to fit the key so you can unscrew 

it to check the pins. Keeps water out.

I did that, but the damn painter got solvent into the thread then I

cocked them up getting them out again ! Great idea but I finished up

having the two plug ends machined out of aluminium at 45 quid with a

slot in them for a coin to be used to open them! I keep a bit of grease

on the thread and it stops water ingress since the rubber seals tend to

curl up and snag!

While you are in the hardware store, get two of the disposable tapered 

nozzles used on caulking guns.

Use them instead of the plastic tubing below the pip pins, the large end 

is cut to clear the balls and the small end leaves a small, neat hole 

for drainage in the lower surface.

I have a very simple idea from my inspector who works on gliders. Buy a

sheet of white self adhesive circular discs about 50mm diameter. As well

as the tail plane pip pins these can be used to cover the drag link pins

on the wings where the surface is curved. If you rig and derig

infrequently like I do just be careful when it comes to removal as it is

possible to pull the paint at the edge of the hole. Best to puncture the

disc and remove it in a circular motion.

My son uses the same stuff on his glider.  You can use the 'sticky  backed 

plastic' that many use to cut out the ident letters on the a/c

I had my local graphics shop make me a bunch.  They made small ones to cover

the flap drive inspection holes as well.  I don't recall the cost but it was

quite inexpensive.

My inspector directed me to a small company dealing in stationery. I

have since run out and must get some more. It would be good if someone

found a mailorder company selling them because it would take me some

time and effort to relocate my source.

If it is difficult to find these discs ready cut to shape it should be

possible to buy sheets of white sticky back plastic from a hardware

store but then you have the tedious business of cutting circles.

Richard - I think the PFA are still regarding this as a mod, so you 

would probably save trouble by using an already-approved approach. 

Have you looked in the Club Hints & Tips? There are several 

suggestions on p22. I think Ian Rickard <mods(at)europaclub.org.uk> 

would know which was the line of least resistance - fairly important 

to consider at present while the PFA is running at one-thinrd the 

strength in Engineering that they had a short while ago (a quarter 

the strength they would like to have).

This is the simplist way to go about it.  Being in the graphics 

business, I cut my own, but any graphics of vinyl sign shop will 

probably give you all the scraps you want.  Simply cut with scissors, 

peal and stick.  When it comes time to remove the pins, peal it off and 

replace once the wings are back on...

I USE A WHITE PLASTIC CLEAN ROOM TAPE TO COVER HOLES AND IT COMES OFF EASY 

WITH NO RESIDUE LEFT BEHIND.
