My ROTAX 914 UL(installed in a Europa Tri-gear XS) is due (well actually overdue) for the mandatory 5 year replacement of rubber hoses, carburettor rubber parts etc. and I have a jaw dropping kit price from the UK Rotax distributor of £661.25 for the parts.
This seems ludicrously expensive. Some of the parts maybe Rotax specific (e.g. the carb mounting rubbers ?) but many of them are "off the shelf" from other suppliers - e,g the Bing carburettor diaphragms, standard 12mm vacuum oil hose etc. and a rough total cost for buying these would be less than half the "official" Rotax spares.
Now as far as the LAA are concerned is it OK to use these totally compatible and standard parts or would they be regarded as "modifications" as they are not "true" Rotax spares.

No doubt someone will put me right. But I was under the impression that there are no time-lifed components on a permit aircraft, everything is on condition and nothing is mandatory. While I would be the first to change something if it is warranted but I also subscribe to the ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’ school.
Regards,
Mike

Well, the 912 has a TBO of 10 calendar years even if it never runs. I know because I have a 10+ year old 912ULS with 6 hours of run time on it.

Craig,
I think that only applies to certified installations – not kit/experimental.

Hi Guys,
Rotax does have a 5 year full rubber replacement on the 912's and 914's. If you are experimental then do what ever you want to do, but that could lead you into trouble one day. It's not like a car that you can pull over to the curb. If you are experimental and have insurance and you have a failure from any rubber part that causes an accident or contributed to an accident that could give and in some case has given them grounds to deny. I have seen enough investigations to know insurance companies will look to see if you have followed the Rotax manual and they will have the investigator document any lack of judgment. Heaven forbid anything you did or didn't do caused the accident. Just because you don't want to do it doesn't mean you shouldn't.
If you are SLSA you have to do it.

If you do go the on condition route, have a good look at the carb rubber sockets and carb diaphragms. The external parts are easy to visually check. Check the coolant tank to see if there is a black sludge , this is dissolved rubber caused by some coolants........

Hi Guys,
The Rotax engine inspection list and change out times are in the "Line Maint. Manual" that you can get online. When I do inspections I just print those pages out and go right down the check list. It is for your safety, your passenger's safety, your wallets long term happiness and possibly keep you in the air and out of a major fight with the insurance company. If you carry a passenger and hurt them or anyone on the ground they might sue or you both may be dead, but the spouse can reach out and touch your family estate big time even if you died. It's also educational and the smart thing to do (a good inspection). I also print out the inspection pages either from the aircraft Mfg's. maint manual to use or use a standard check list if the aircraft Mfg. doesn't have one.
Instead of making everyone that knows you suffer why not take a few suffering moments and use the check list. I have been to court hundreds of times in my job before I retired and the bottom line is "if you didn't write it down you didn't do it".
The lawyer and court will think you were grossly negligent for not doing proper inspections on an airplane since inspections are the industry standard for aircraft.
My soapbox, but I'm just trying to help everyone to fly safe, have fun, confidence in their aircraft and stay out of court and keep your money. Pinching a penny now could cost you and your family a million later.
Better education and more education leads to better decisions.

Roger
Sure wish you lived on the east coast so that I could take my aircraft to you for Rotax inspection and service.
