In the building stage and near to ordering my engine, 200HP IO-360.  Does anyone have opinions, (I know, that is a dumb question Smile, on 4 to 1 versus Vetterman crossover exhaust systems.  Which would be a better choice?

Don't know about better but I can tell you that my neighbor's 4 into 1 is louder than my Vetterman crossover. Both on O-360.

I looked into it briefly.  Once I saw the price, it was easy to decide to go with the standard Vetterman.

Hi John,

I ordered the new Vetterman 4 into 4 system for my RV-8 with an Lycoming IO-390. Haven't tried it yet, but its another option to consider. Larry claims the maximum HP output with the 4 into 4 setup. I've attached a couple of pictures of it.

I used a Sky Dynamics' 4 into with which I am very happy. On the down side it take a lot of glass work on the bottom cowl to accommodate the collector. photo of the header attached and you can see it in this shot from the ground as well.

John,

When I was racing and testing and changing exhaust to get the most power I could, I found that the four 4-1 was good for max torque and HP at the red line. The 4-2-1, equal length exhaust provided max torque & HP in the mid RPM range. Granted, that was on a car with a very different engine (1.8, dual overhead cam, fuel injected, with a high red-line, and tuned w/in a breadth of its life.) than the big slow turning things we use on our planes. In my application I went with the 4-2-1 (or tri-Y as some call it) because I needed mid range torque.

With that little bit of knowledge, I would probably select the Vetterman’s crossover, thinking that you are going to run it in the mid-range RPM’s unless you are into racing.

It is all about what you are looking for and where you want your power peak.

Bill
