I just finished loading Pappy's great article on the history of the CJ6A 

on the Wiki.



You can find it but going to the Wiki, clicking on the Community Portal 

link, selecting "Nanchang CJ6A", and then clicking on the link under 

"History".

Wiki was developed by the folks working on open software. They needed a 

way to develop documentation in an ad-hoc manner, with whoever had time 

or inclination doing the work. They needed a way to collaborate on 

building informational web pages quickly and easily.



So a wiki is a super-easy-to-update web site. Anyone can make entries 

and anyone can edit entries. Pages can be super-fancy with formatting or 

just a place to put useful text and pictures.



I thought that a wiki would be very useful to the aviation community. We 

need a place to put aircraft and aviation documentation. The mailing 

list has been great but it is too ephemeral. You have to be on it for a 

long time to catch all the stuff that goes by. If someone posts a 

particularly meaty message and then you subscribe the next day, you 

won't see the message nor will you even know it went by.



OTOH, if someone takes that especially meaty message and drops it into 

the right place on the wiki, you will find it when you go searching for 

information.



Another way of looking at a wiki is a living encyclopedia. One of the 

best encyclopedias in the world today is a wiki. it is the wikipedia. 

You can see it at http://www.wikipedia.org. Anyone can write an article. 

The result is a huge collection of really good articles. The quality of 

material is amazingly good.



Of course, you could just go look and get an idea.

It's simply an internet abbreviation for Waikiki beach in Hawaii.  When someone says they "read in on the wiki", they simply were laying on the beach, cold drink in hand, reading the FAR's.  :-}
