Gentlemen,
I'm almost ready to close and rivet the top forward skin on our RV-9A. I need to take pictures and document the area before I close it.
In the past I've always clecoed every panel in its entirety before beginning to rivet. Has anyone ever partially riveted one side of the top forward skin WITHOUT having clecoed the rest of the skin in place before beginning to rivet? If I could do this it would really ease trying to buck some of the rivets from within.
My sense is I might get skin creep or be unable to match the holes in the rest of the panel if I attempt to do this.
I have a pair of 7 x 8 access panels in the center panels of this skin so this will help riveting everything in the center areas.

Hi Joe,
My $.02 would be to leave as many installed as possible even if it means a few scratches on your arm. I would also recommend clecoing the whole thing on, then removing the few you need to get better access.

Joe, here is my 2 cents too. We just finished up that part of my RV 9A about 3 weeks ago. I do not have access panels in the skin like you do, so we took it the traditional way.�We started riveting the center rib from the panel end down to the firewall. Do not rivet the firewall to the top skin until every other rivet is in place. We then worked the sub panel rib putting in as many clecoes as possible that would allow an arm to fit inside. At some point you will move to bucking underneath the skin by climbing in the plane and working on your back under the skin. (No fun here and a heavy blanket is needed) As far as hole alignment goes, we did not have any issues and all holes lined up. The hard part of this step is to be bucking from on your back. It is tight and not much room to move, but you can at least see where the rivet tails are. You may also need to modify several bucking bars to get into the tight and awkward places.
