Here is Kent White's web site. I purchased his material 10 years ago
and have become a gas welder using his learning techniques. I now weld
engine mounts, weldments and sub assemblies and the like with the
little Meco Kent sells. Its more of a hobby and to prove to my self
that welding can be done at home. Aluminum welding with gas can be
done...I practice with coke and beer cans and have made more then a
handful of aircraft fuel tanks over the years. For me it was common
sense, practice and the right tools (not expensive at all). Last year,
Kit Planes did a article on gas welding and used the same torch
(Meco)that Kent sells (get the tip kit and carrying fish)

BTW, this little torch can weld up to 1/2 inch with no problem. Using
the N1 & N2 tips, I weld 4130 chrome molly tubing and play weld the
coke cans with the N-1 tip. (I used the N-5 tip for the 1/2 inch
project last year....)

Rookies Welding Tanks ...
Thanks for the post Martin!
I wanted to make my own tanks so I purchased the "Gas welding aluminum"
video by Kent White (since I already have a torch that I'm pretty
confident
with) but the TIG guys here in the University of Florida machine shop
laughed at me so I put that task off. I figured it only looked doable
in
the video because Kent White has supernatural powers when it comes to
aluminum.
Your post has changed my mind on that, and since my primary objective
for
the build is learning, I'm going to give gas welding my tanks a shot.
Every
now and then an encouraging post like yours makes reading this list
really
worthwhile! Worst I can do is mess up some aluminum, and wasted
material is
often money well spent just because of the experience gained.

All this talk of welding your own tanks has got me all fired up to try it
myself. I'm building an 801. Where do I start. Are there plans or do I just
build them to fit the hole. I plan on using 2 in each wing. I don't know a
thing about it. I can gas weld OK. But that's about it. Any suggestions
would be greatly appreciated. I won't need them until may be Winter or
Spring, so I have plenty of time.
