I fly a 601XL, and built my canopy side rails 20 mm higher than called for
in the plans. What was called out as 75 mm height is now 95 mm. This has
worked out very well. I have 27 mm mimimum edge distance from the nearest
mounting hole instead of 7mm that it would have been and I have good head
clearance with the original 601 canopy. My original thought was that the 7
mm edge distance was too close for a plexiglass 5/16" hole. I was afraid of
cracking the canopy. I drilled my canopy with a 1/2" step drill with very
light force at room temperature. The bit was allowed to warm the site as it
was cutting and the bit was held perfectly perpendicular to the curvature of
the area. No cracks after 2.1/2 years.
