I have 2 doccuments I received from a friend of mine who is an aircraft
builder in Australia concerning the 601 XL that lost a canopy down there.
One is "External Assistance to Recreational Aviation Australia - Collision
with water 22 KM NNW Gold Coast Airport". This is dated June 2009. The other
is "Recreational Aircraft Airworthiness Notice 070109-1" concerning a
secondary canopy latch. Their version of a secondary latch is detailed with
color pictures. It's way too much to print here. If anyone wants these 2
doccuments from down under please send an E-mail to backstagelive(at)gmail.com
and I will send you a copy.

On a lighter note, EAA was fantastic this year! The boys in the Zenith booth
were great as usual answering questions. As always, I look all over the
field for an airplane kit that I would really want to build. Once again, I
couldn't find anything I liked better than my 601 XL! One of my friends that
stay with me from Seattle just about lived at the Zenith booth for the
entire week. He wants a 750! The builders dinner was great again as usual,
but guys, you need to get a bigger place!

One thing I saw that I really liked were the rivets on the wing of a
EuroStar. It's one of those clones of a 601 XL and the wings look identical.
They use the #5 rivets on the wing identical to what we use, but they fill
each rivet with something that makes it look like a solid rivet. It's done
strictly for looks and I like the way it looks! I don't know what they use,
and the people in their booth didn't seem to know much about the airplane.
It's built somewhere in Russia and they get the wings wings with the rivets
filled. They did know that the squrt something in there with a syringe, but
I don't know what they use. Bondo is too heavy. Does anyone know what they
 use?

Does anyone have any pictures of how you put your wheel pants on a 601 XL? I
have an idea, but I would like to see how other people did the job? Could
you lead me to your website or E-mail me some pictures? Thanks.

The Aussie Canopy report is on only a piece of the accident report. It is not the accident report in total. The investigator was given a small piece of the canopy to look at, thats all. The full report is still to be released.

As far as the canopy lock, after a number of loose canopies came open (normally the PAX side ) and the reported canopy open in flight stories we saw on the net, we came up with this secondary lock system. I just picked a few Ideas and gave pictures to the RAA as examples of what can be done. Since the secondary locks have been fitted no more open canopies.

Please post some pictures or a link to the pics of the secondary lock.  I think a lot of builders would be interested.

Here is a link to the Aussie RAA website..

The canopy latch pictures are in download 13 Jan 09 page

There are lots of ways to do this, it was a stop gap system we came up with down here till we get some more info from Zenith..

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> I went a somewhat different way. After trying several latch systens, which I didn't like, I hit on an idea gleaned from the 650 canopy. I used a linkage from a cross-tube, pushing two spring loaded barrel bolts into each side. Description follows, since I'm not savvy enough to attach pics: I ran a garage door lock handle through the side, slightly below the level of the package shelf, with a square aluminum tube all the way across into a fabricated socket inside the right side skin. The rod moves two spring loaded short arms, which, in turn, pull a barrel bolt on each side into a piece of 3/4 square tube welded to the inner side of the existing canopy frame. The barrel bolts ride in a sleeve of aluminum tubing, held in place by two U-shackles set through a plate over the triangular piece at the outer edge of the seat back, forward of the shoulder harness plate. I ran two coil springs from about two thirds up the actuator arms, to the lower part of the baggage shelf. They pull the barrel bolts forward into the tubing stubs. For an interior release, I ran a 1/4" inch 4130 rod up under the cockpit sill, back along the stringer, with a 90 bend to fit into a hole in the left actuator arm, and a 90 bend at its forward end, just short of, and below the instrument panel. In use, twisting the outside handle releases ther bolts, and the springs pull them forward again. When you close the canopy, you pull the steel rod back, canopy fits in place, and then you push the rod forward to let the barrel bolts slide into place. Crude, but effective.

I keep reading posts praising the virtues of the new latching system,
but there has already been at least one serious accident after a
canopy with the new system came open in flight. I will admit that the
new system has some advantages, for one, you can clearly see if the
latches are secure. Assuming of course someone bothers to look at them
during preflight. In the case I am aware of, the canopy came open in
in flight because one side was not fastened and the pilot in the right
seat tried to close it in flight. I know you're not supposed to
attempt to re-latch the canopy in flight, but not everyone pays close
 enough attention to the POH.

The way the new system is designed, any attempt to close one side of
the canopy in flight is almost certainly going to cause the other side
to unlatch. At least with the old system, this is not likely to happen
because both sides latch up independently of each other. I think the
new system can be improved by putting slots where the linkages connect
to the latch hooks and a spring on each hook to allow each side to
latch independently of the other. That way trying to re-latch one side
of the canopy will not affect the other latch. This should not be a
 difficult modification to make.

				Brian
thats why I kept the older system. I liked the idea of just re locking one side
