Mike W & Kolb Friends,
I am attaching a photo of the horizontal stab attach point on my Firestar to illustrate importance of proper spacer placement in order to minimize the fore and aft movement of the horizontal stabilizer with elevator deflection.
The goal is to install the required spacers is such a way that the the centerline of the hinge pin on the elevator is "in-line" with the pivot bolt of the elevator horn.
With the spacers installed as shown in the picture, my horizontal stabilizer moves less than 1/16th of an inch on one side and less than 1/8th on the other side with full up, to full down elevator deflection.

Mornin' John,
Regarding your nylon thrust blocks, if I understand their placement correctly, wouldn't the
hor. stab. slide fore and aft against them?
As we have discussed the hor. stab movement before, it moves fore and aft with the elevator travel (about 1/8" to 3/16", at maximum elevator up and down).
Is this a lubricated thrust block?
Soon, I hope, I will will be back to work on my plane, and I should not have to fold the wings, either. (more about this soon).

Holy Smokes. I don't think I ever caught that spacer in my elevator bolt. I mean C I know there was a spacer C but I don't think I ever recognized it's role in effecting fore & aft travel
of the hor. stabilizer.
Now C I can see it's mission is to get the pivot point as close to the rotation axis as possible C thereby limiting fore & aft travel. Live and learn.
My Kolb instruction manual may have mentioned this spacer C but I can't recall. I assembled the hinge mechanism about 8 years ago.
Thanks C Gene. You be da man!!

Hey Mike, quit that! Next thing ya know I'll have an identity crisis.
Last I heard, I was a brown noser and "just plain stupid", and had a childhood development problem that causes me to "flip flop faster than a politician".
Seriously,
I had hoped the attached pict would help someone understand how to work out a fix for excessive horizontal stabilizer movement.
Excessive movement has been known to cause the front horizontal stab. attach point to fail. I've see pictures of where the stainless steel attach bracket failed in flight and the stabilizer flipped up against the brace cable, but thankfully the pilot was lucky enough to be able to make a safe emergency landing anyhow.
