Tim,

I was caught by your comments on the one flight where you had the hight CHTs on climb out.

Have you experienced this before?

Those of us in the warmer southern climates will have to worry about heating a lot, so if you can shed more light on the engine cooling issue, we'd all appreciate it.

Thanks - Grumpy

Well, the story isn't as big as I was worried it was. When in
Wisconsin, at 30F OAT, I was trying to keep the CHT's below 400
for the most part. #1 was my hottest, and just before the trip I
decided to trim the air dam in front of Cyl. 1 by about 3/8" to
give it more cooling. Well, now #2 is the hottest. I'll probably
trim 1/8" off of #2 as well. But, on climbouts with OAT's in
the 70's-80's, I was not able to keep it reasonably below 400.
I didn't know what the max was, so I called both Vic for
his opinion, and Bart at Aerosport for his. They both coincided.
They said I shouldn't worry about temps like 435F or more
on climbout and that engine can handle 500. So I tested the
theory. On
climbout from SNF and on my route home, I just climbed anyway,
ignoring my self-assigned warning of 400 and 417 on my EIS.
Sure enough, I only hit about 436, even in extended climbs,
and that's with a new engine. Vic says after about 50-60 hours,
the temps go down a bit yet too.

So, you *may* end up trimming your front cyl. air dams (or you
maybe won't, too), but I think you'll end up finding cooling
should be OK. My oil temps usually hung around 185, with
highs around 195-197 I think.
