In the September issue of Sport Aviation (EAA magazine) there was an excellent article on page 80 titled "Carburetor Icing Prevention; Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin". It was written by Peter L. Rouse, Aerospace Engineer, of the FAA's Special Airplane Directorate.
In the article there is a graph which shows the probability of carb icing for various temperatures and relative humidity conditions. What stands out is the very small area in the graph where a pressure type carburetor is "susceptible" to icing.
The article says:
To recognize carburetor icing, the warning signs are;
- A drop in rpm in fixed-pitch propeller airplanes
- A drop in manifold pressure in constant-speed propeller airplanes
- In both types, usually there will be rough engine operation
If you don't have a copy of the magazine, do try to get it or at least have someone copy the article for you.
