I was just looking through my April QST which is the ARRL Ham
publication and came upon a red Kitfox. It was a full page add for
an ARRL publication called "Amateur Radio on the Move." It is a "how
to" manual for using Ham radios in mobile installations. The front
cover features what I take to be a Model 4 red Kitfox with tail
number N91KF. The identification "Kitfox" is prominent on the side
of the aircraft. Looking good!

N91KF was the Demo plane that Skystar demonstrated and also used as a test
bed. Don't know who may own it now. I have a real nice photo of it on Full
Lotus floats.

Dave, Jim, Ted:
Now I am wondering if this could be the plane that I saw at
Davis airport way back when I owned and flew a TriPacer. I seem to
recall seeing a red Kitfox at Davis in possibly 1984, or '85 at the
latest, because I know that I sold my TriPacer in 1986, and that was
after having taken it apart and storing it for a considerable period in
my barn in Newcastle. Solano is quite close to Davis, and it is
compelling to think that this might be the airplane that I saw way back
then, but common sense and how long people keep things dictates against
it.
Funny, I have thought of that early sighting of a Kitfox, which
only now I understand would have had to be one of the first ones. I
didn't think much of it at the time, and certainly didn't then even
suspect that I would one day own one of em.

I took dozens of photos of N1KF in July 1991 at an airshow in Oklahoma
City. I subsequently ordered my KF-IV in October 1991. One of the
pictures I have is of the data plate which was mounted on the firewall
just behind the right rudder pedals.
The data plate shows that N1KF was a Kitfox Model IV-1050 manufactured
by Denney Aerocraft on 20 March 1991. You've seen it in lots of
advertising pictures including with floats. It had droop tips and a 912
engine. It was used as the demonstrator and made lots of airshows until
N1KS (the first speedster)came out.
Cheers,

Duane,
Ross used to lurk on the list. He may answer this himself. I doubt it was
his airplane that you saw at Davis in 1984. I think he took delivery of his
Model IV kit about the same time I did in 1993. We visited from time to
time as we built and comes to the Cameron Park Fly-in every year. He is
retired AA as I recall and is a great guy. As a matter of fact our flying
group caused him a little grief one day as the four of us flew into his
place - he grows wine grapes and the fire marshal saw us go in and paid him
a visit shortly thereafter. The marshal got on him for storing his KF in his
barn and I think that was the end of his plans to build a dirt strip near
his home in Suisun. At least that is the way I remembered it. He keeps it
at Nut Tree, has the NSI EA81 in it and I believe is currently working on a
RV-8.
I will have to get in touch with him and get some details.
Well I just did. It is his airplane. He is not a Ham, but his hangar mate
is. That is the connection. This was the first he knew of the picture, but
I am sure his friend will show him the cover.

Interesting. Because ham operation from an aircraft is forbidden in
Europe. While I am often LA0HA/MM (maritime mobile) I can't be LA0HA/AM
(aviation mobile).

Michel, this might interest you in two arenas. In the late 70's I was
heavily into competive sailing. We were planning on an off shore race
between San Francisco and Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands. I decided to put
my Ham radio on the boat for safety sake and during the crossing, I made
contact with an airline pilot, a Ham. This was on AM single side band. He
explained that the aircraft radios had this capability and he regularly
exercised his privileges on these long flights. I thought this was a great
idea as 5 hours on auto pilot can get pretty boring.
It is interesting how one agency considers certain behavior uncivilized and
another sees nothing wrong with it. It would be interesting to understand
the different thinking.

It was probably an old file photo.
