Does anyone out there have any advice on installing the B&C alternator on a stock CJ? I ask because I’m hearing a couple different things about adaptor plates, oil seals, special gears, etc. I’ve ordered the alternator and VR from B&C, an adaptor plate from Doug Sapp, but would really like to hear from someone who has been there and done that just to make sure we aren’t missing something. Please contact off list at jblake207(at)comcast.net (jblake207(at)comcast.net) or voice 334-791-5690. Thanks, Jon

I would suggest calling the owner of B&C himself. He is a terrific
person, DEDICATED to making a great product and knows these issues like
the back of his hand. If you do, please tell him I said hello and wish
him well. I strongly believe in this mans products and would purchase
anything he sells without hesitation.

I've recently been thru the wringer with this with the B&C alternator I had installed for me on my CJ. Multiple alternator failures in flight, broken gears, searching the engine for metal parts, spending all my time at OSH working on the plane, etc. Do it right and it works like a champ. Don't and it is a mess.
DO NOT use the Housai pinion gear that drives the generator. ONLY use the M-14P drive gear. Make sure you adjust the backlash properly in the ring gear that drives the generator pinion gear.
George Coy got me the proper M-14 pinion gear. Took like six to eight weeks and cost $275. The one I got from George is here on my desk ready to be sent to Bill at B&C who fortunately had one at OSH and gave it to me so I could fly home after draining the oil at OSH to remove the brass shavings in the oil from the Housai gear failure (now THAT'S customer service!!). I later found the missing cog in the engine when I got back home. It could have caused MAJOR damage if it had worked its way lower in the accessory case.
After my debacle, Bill was going to work on a modification of the male spline shaft that he provides with the alternator. Even with his new shaft, you still MUST use the M-14P gear.
The B&C Alternator and VR are very simple to install and the B&C VR gives lots of protection. Just do it right. Make sure you also follow the B&C installation and troubleshooting guide to verify proper voltages, etc.
Hope this helps.

Jon,Without doing a bunch of digging here are two folks who have used my seal plate.
Contact Jim Bernier, his email is JBernier(at)dart.org (JBernier(at)dart.org) he has installed an alt using my seal plate. So has Mort of Mort's Flying service mortsaero(at)comcast.net (mortsaero(at)comcast.net).
Best,
Doug

But Pappy has an M14 and not the original Housai 285.

The design of the Housai and M-14P generators are different in how the lower bearing on the generator is oiled. Hence, the pinion drive gear is different.
I have attached three pictures of the M-14P pinion drive gear here. Note the gear has a metal plug at the base. The Housai gear does not.
In the B&C application, this metal plug serves two purposes:
1) it keeps oil out of the bottom of the alternator during aerobatics (a very good thing), and;
2) it provides support to the male shaft that fits into the female splined part of the pinion gear. Without this support, the male shaft, due to gravity, vibration, etc will fall out of the shear coupling that is on the alternator. When this happens, the alternator stops spinning (now you are flying off battery power only). This can also cause the shear coupling in the B&C design to fail. (the shear coupling is replaceable and is there to protect the engine in the rare case of a bearing in the alternator seizing).
Bill (owner of B&C) was considering making an injection moulded male shaft with a collar on it that would prevent the shaft from falling out of the shear coupling. This only solves item 2. However, he did have one customer who had a hole worn thru the metal plug after many hours of flying. So, the injection moulded part was to prevent this from happening. What is unknown is what the wear on the collar may/will be.
I hope this helps.
Craig
