I apologise for not trawling the archive before posting this one, but I'll get to that in a moment - honest! Our question from the syndicate here concerns outrigger latching. Yesterday 8/9/09 landing at base in almost zero wind, after a nice local sortie, the downwind wing dropped very shortly after normal 2-point contact, and then the rollout departure sequence began, very deftly reigned in by the handling pilot (not me!). We speculate that the outrigger was either not in a fully latched (locked) condition at touchdown - ie. on gear lowering, or might have become unlatched immediately after touchdown. Arrival was not heavy however.

Two observations - firstly that this right outrigger _can_ be unlatched with some manipulation of the flap itself when parked - not so the left one. Presumably, therefore, drag loading of the flap could have compromised the outrigger; secondly - this right wing drop has happened before. We normally deploy gear / flap firmly in order to ensure an outrigger latched condition. In yesterdays event, the continued rollout was per normal, and the aircraft was stable when taxiing and when parked - and the outriggers normally deployed. Some abrasion to the bolt-head attaching the outrigger wheel fitting has occurred and this at least will be replaced.

Q. how to determine the condition of the outrigger mechanism - strip-down
Q. wear or other functional issues to anticipate when we do that
Q. prevention of further mishaps
Any pointers much appreciated.

Glenn,

This is probably a flap rigging problem. I suggest you re-read carefully page 9M-11 of the Build Manual, and look at Fig 16 which shows the outrigger mechanism in the down and locked position.
Fig 16 shows that there must be a 5-7 mm gap between the AN bolt which is bolted to the FL3 flap hinge and the forward end of the slot in OR5. This prevents any movement of the flap due to vibration to push OR5 forward and cause OR4 to unlock. If you do not have this gap, you can unlatch the system by pushing the flap slightly up by hand. It seems to be what happens on your aircraft.
How to fix that ? Caution: do not lengthen the slot in OR5 as this would cause the outrigger legs to trail down in the retracted position instead of being horizontal, therefore causing additional drag. The fix is to adjust the flap control mechanism so that after reaching the latched position, the flaps continue to extent to about 27degrees and making sure there is the abovementioned gap. To make the flap angle adjustment you need to adjust the flap operating horn FL21 and the rod end of the flap actuating push rod. See page 28M -12 of the Build Manual. When this adjustment are done, check on both sides that you can push the flap up and down without causing OR5 to move forward.
Hope that helps.
