Hi All,
I have 2 Tanis engine preheat systems to install this week and one in a couple more weeks. I will report back on install and I will try and get the owners to let us know how it works for them here on the forum. I talked to one of the company owners last week. Looks like a really worth while system for those of you that live in cold, shivering, frostbite country.

I saw the tanis system and I thought it was a lot of money. I used 3 50watt
heat pads. One on the oil tank and 2 on the block. It works great and cost
only 50 bucks. My engine oil is at 120 when I start the engine. Here is the
link to the pads.

Anyone can email me for pictures.

Hi Guys,
Before you think you have done a good preheat job read this article about preheating misconceptions.
Just warming oil does not preheat a system. Metal parts expand at different rates. There are a couple of factors.

Your right Roger, that is why I have 2 50 watt pads on my crank case. What I
have done is like the Reiff preheater for the 912 engines.
http://www.reiffpreheat.com/Rotax912.htm
I also put a blanket around my engine so that it keeps the heat in. The only
difference with the Tanis system is that you have the bolt heaters in each
cylinder. I do like that but am not willing to pay $650 for it.
I do not live in a real cold climate but I find that even when the engine is
around 50f it starts harder than when warmed up. The other day that was the
case. Hanger temp was 50f, I had the heater plugged in all night, it had
been 2 weeks since I had been flying, the engine started like I had been
flying it all morning.
I believe any time you can get the engine closer to operating temps on start
up, it is a good thing. So I will plug in the heater the night before
anytime I go flying. Even in the summer.
Matt

As far as those bolds that are replaced in the Tanis system, this is what
Reiff has to say about it: quote from their web site.
A big advantage of our system is that it is non-invasive. All our parts are
installed "on" the engine. Nothing is installed inside the engine, and you
do not need to remove any Rotax parts or replace any Rotax parts with our
parts. For example, one competitor's system replaces the Rotax intake
manifold bolts and a crankcase bolt with their own heated bolts. These are
simply hollowed out bolts with heating elements epoxied into the hollowed
out core. As a general design philosophy we feel it is safer not to replace
parts that were installed by the engine manufacturer, especially critical
structural parts like bolts.

Tanis is approved by Rotax for those bolts and they are not structurally significant bolts. Any thing that you can do to get the entire engine warm before a cold start is good. Tanis has been making preheat systems for Lycoming and Continental for quite some time, they also have them for Jabiru. Tanis is a good proven system. I'm not saying others don't work, but this one is Rotax approved.

I live in a place where the temp varies from -20F to 100F.
I am also using electric heating pads from an amazon eShop.
Heat spreads through metal very similarly to electricity, after enough
time most everything gets warm.
Personally, I would NOT put too much stock what Rotax suggests
regarding 3rd party products. Cross marketing endorsements often
have more to do with under the table financial arrangements than
just the engineering.
Just look at the history of approved and delisted engine oils. Honda
oil never made the list because they make competing engines, for example.

It is funny you should say that because with the Tanis system, you can only
buy it from a Rotax dealer. All the other systems they sell, you can buy
directly from Tanis. I am sure it works great but my 50 buck systems works
great too. $650 is a rip off in my opinion.

COLD WEATHER STARTING
Dear ROAN subscriber,
A cold engine can be difficult to start. More importantly a cold engine start can cause increased wear, damaging engine parts and reducing the longevity of your engine. An important consideration during cold weather operation is engine pre heating to prevent engine damage, increase engine longevity and reduce engine overhaul costs.
ROAN has released a Product Review Video covering the Tanis Engine Preheat System for the Rotax 912 / 914.

p.s.
I have installed two of these and the customers are tickled pink. They got to start their engine's at almost 85F on a 18F morning. They put them on a timer and the plane was ready to go when they got to the hanger. Pretty easy to install, too.
If anyone here is interested I may be able to help a little on the price.
