As some of you know that I'm in the process of rebuilding my instrument panel. Stein has shipped it back to me and I should receive it shortly. I had OP Tech/Aerosonic full intergrated system in my RV10.
We know how that turned out.
So I did the research on the G500 and decided that was what I wanted. So I bought it and will have a pair of 430w's with 330 transponder. Also took out my strike finder for a new WX500 stormscope.
In the G500 install manual they tell you how to wire it up, even though it's not supported yet. Near future they said. Well I called the tech yesterday to find out how they're coming with the sofeware for the WX500. The field engineer said, it was not and if they ever do, it would be a least two yrs

Patrick, I think you answered your question .... XM weather. The
stormscope just can't compete with all the additional info you get from
XM weather, and I think Garmin knows that. Can't you port the XM
weather to your big screen???

no place to put a strikefinder. I'm begining to feel like I'm dealing

Now I ask you how many retro aircraft out there that would put this
kind of unit in and not have or would want to have a WX500 stormscope in
them.
And yes it will display on the 430w with the little screen, but, You
buy the big screen so you can see it. We have XM weather on portable due
to different planes we fly.
Thats my story
Thanks Garmin

To go into known weather you have to have onboard radar or lighting dection. Sometime weather on xm doesn't show up as you need or is 15 min. late
I have portable xm on my 496 soon to be 696 I hope.Depending on the CFO and what she says. I use it among different aircraft I fly.
I have flown with stormscopes for years.

I've never had the chance to fly with radar or a Stormscope. After
flying blind for awhile, I started using CheapBastard software on an RF
Palm (anybody use that hall of fame mashup) and suddenly there was
light, and I could see around corners. Then the 396 came out and I
thought I died and went to heaven.

I'll probably never get the chance to fly with radar or a scope but
won't feel limited because I've never been so enabled.

Looking forward to lighting up XM weather on the GRTs.

Patrick, your RV10 avionics journey is heart wrenching. Thanks for
sharing. Hope it all comes together in the end.

The XM from what I have seen is similar to what you see on weather
computer in FBO, with similar delays. What you get on Stormscope is
where electrical activity exists right now, which normally is where
the worst bumps are located. Radar tells you where rain is right now,
but doesn't tell you much about what is behind the first line of rain.
XM is strategic planning info. Stormscope and radar are tactical tools
when planning or weather behavior isn't as good as you hoped.

Agreed.

I guess after one (inadvertent) flight into what I'd describe as light
embedded cells, I quickly decided that such conditions weren't really
manageable with zero weather capability. When I first had access to
CheapBastard, I found that Nexrad images in the cockpit was a quantum
leap, an order of magnitude improvement over total dependence on ATC,
Flight Watch, and my dilated eyeballs. Embedded light cells were still
to be avoided due to a lack of a 'tactical' view but flight thru the SE
US including typical FL afternoons became very doable.

Flights involved staying in clear air 90% of the time with very limited
cloud penetrations. But with 25 min old Nexrad images, I could see the
big picture, watch how it moved and see around corners. JAX center
controllers may be the best in the states at steering traffic around and
thru weather. It was fun being able to see almost as well as they could
in pre-396 days.

G396-style Nexrad works really well on convective SE US days with
defined cells and lines. But I'm imagining that in embedded situations
where it is 100% IMC with embedded buildups, flight is best done with
radar and/or storm scope equipment. And a more heavily loaded
aircraft than a Maule.

Kelly is correct on the Strikefinder/Stormscope; I have come through by
avoiding the strike areas. Rain was unbelievable ; pouring into though the
doors. As for XM Nexrad, there is a delay but it is still useful for
tactical decisions. The XM nexrad will play a loop on the GRTs; with a
little knowledge of the rate of movement and the location it is possible to
circumnavigate the bad stuff.
