HI Guys,

  

    Does anyone have a copy of the  Lycoming engine  picture that shows the route that oil goes through in the  engine block   while the oil is cool  and later when the oil is  hot and the thermovalve opens.

  

   And does all the oil go through the cooler  before going into the  engine galleries?  or does only some of the oil  go through the cooler  while most of the oil  goes through the  engine./

Jack,

The oil cooler is a full flow as long as there is not excessive back pressure, such as the oil congealing in the cooler... Once the back pressure reaches a set point it blows open a bypass valve that sends the oil around the cooler...  

As far as the order in which the oil circulates through the passages very roughly (from memory)

1. main oil gallery in right crankcase half to:

A) Main bearings, and through them in spurts to the connecting rod bearings

B) From rear main bearing to:

     a] crankshaft idler gears

     b] cam bearings

     c]hydraulic tappets

     c]push rods (spurts again)

     d] rocker arms  (which are at the end of a very long, tortuous path of spurts)

     e] and finally the  valve stems get coated from oil mist (which is why they wear like crazy)
