That was actually a KF model 2. That was the HKS Demo plane the talk about
on their website. Nice motor, but pricey and not enough hp, especially for a
4.

The tail was different, more like the Avid. Mine is squared off, classic KF
shape. Started me wondering which tail I've got.

The thing that amazed me was the large amount of Lancair 4's there. Makes
sense, since it's a long range cross-country airplane. Just seemed to be
everywhere. Of course Vans were in force, no surprise.

I'd bet Kitfoxes are #2 on the list of most built experimentals, right
behind Vans. But since they are not the best CC airplanes, maybe that's why
there weren't more at SnF? A trip from the West coast is a major effort in a
KF, not so much in a Lancair, or RV7.

I don't recall anyone making fun of your grammer Malcolm. I guess I may
have missed it when I was on vacation. Next time it happens let me know.
Where in Michigan are you located?

I agree with the speed issue wrt presence of KF vs Lancair. Also most Lancairs will be IFR capable making weather less of an issue. When I went to Osh Kosh I took off work the whole week with my planned departure from Osh Kosh being Wednesday in order to have a window that would nearly guarantee decent weather for my return. I do not have my IFR ticket.

True about the IFR. Why wouldn't you IFR one of those beauties?

If all goes as planned, I'll be making the trip to Osh, with a neat surprise
for you all. I'll need to do what you did, to leave enough window for wx.

Actually I did. The plane is IFR, the pilot is not. I plan to do my IFR training in it when I get time.

While at S&F I talked to the insurance guys and asked
a few questions, amoung them, how much to ensure a
Lancair 4. Only Falcon would insure a 4 these days,
and when I mentioned knowing someone who paid $18,000
per year for his, the Falcon rep didn't blink. We got
into a few details and I was told that too many low
time pilots were flying the 4's and crashing. Now
Falcon required retraining every 6 months before
continuing insurance on the 4's.

So if you think a taildragger KF is a problem, or your
insurance is too high, be glad you are not flying a
Lancair 4. You could fly first class a lot cheaper.

Kurt, I think it was Alan Daniels that posted that the Lancair IV has a
25% accident record. Lots have gone down and a lot of people have died in
them. The Lancair factory has a program in concert with an insurance
company that if followed will reduce the insurance significantly - down
below $10,000. Still if I had that kind of money in addition to gas and
everything else, I would just pick up another Kitfox or two or maybe just
foy the big bird around the country to meet some of you.

The program is essentially as you mentioned. Extensive checkout with a
factory authorized instructor and regular recurrent training. On the
project across the street, we closed out the fuselage Friday, yesterday we
closed the door and today we are installing door hinges etc. It is an
interesting project, but I am not really excited to fly in it. we'll see.

Thanks Lowell,

I wanted to fly since the 8th grade. My list of
desired planes developed into the KitFox, the Lancair
4, Staggerwing, and a '63 or 4 Debonaire. Took me
almost 40 years to work up from poverty and buy the
KitFox first. Looks like the '4 will be too expensive
for me to bother with. I can't justify insurance
requirements that high. Still a VW mentality in a
Beemer world I guess. Probably end up with the KF for
bush flying and fun. Something else for cross country
like the RV 10, a Lionheart, etc. Hummm. A Lionheart
on floats? Smile
