Hi Jos,
Blue Mountain Avionics have just released a new generation 4 version of
their EFIS lite. Small display (3.8 inches) but it has all the previous
features plus now high resolution contoured terrain display as well as
airspace mapping on the GPS screens, showing projected track ahead.. Other
screens show flight instruments (similar to Dynon plus ground speed and
track, wind aloft ) and a HSI display from GPS displaying "virtual VOR". You
can set up any point as a virtual VOR point. It doesn't have ability to
display AOA like the Dynon.

Price is 2750 US dollars I think - inclused all the GPS system. For 3900
they now make EFIS Lite plus, with a 6 inch display.

Andy cautioned me that some people have had some problems with the previous
versions, but it does look very nice. Has anyone on the list used the BM
EFIS lite or sport EFIS ?

Regards,
Keith Hickling.

Keith,

We are flying our Europa XS with an older Blue Mountain EFIS 1 and EFIS Lite
for backup. They work really well and are making test flight easy. The new
G4 boxes have some really neat features and more are coming - I understand
weather (NEXRAD) will be along soon (Oshkosh??). And since BMA really only
has one software, the older boxes get the new features. In our case, we
will have to send the E1 back for additional memory in order to have the new
terrain zoom features. It was a bit of a pain to get everything set up but
we have confidence that our sensors are calibrated - if you just hook up a
sending unit from ACS or a wire to the VDO on the Rotax, unless you test the
sensor, you don't know for sure. Last evening I flew airspeed calibration
tests. Now I will adjust the calibration table in the EFIS to eliminate
position error and indicated airspeed will be the same as calibrated
airspeed. Really nice!!

Support from BMA is pretty good. There is telephone support and there is a
discussion board. I found the board very helpful - you can do a search for
a topic. You must realize that most use the board for problem solving, so
don't be discouraged, most BMA owners get their systems working just fine.
And BMA can recommend shops that are experienced
with installing and working with their units. They even offer on site
installation and set up - not a bad way to go if you have difficulty or are
intimidated by electronics. The other great feature of the board is that
BMA monitors the board and incorporates changes and suggestions made on the
board. There are several F 117 pilots who have helped Greg revise the HSI
and ADI displays to similar standards that the military uses. The manuals
are not great, but Larry is rewriting them. The ones he's done (power board
and G3 Lite) are quite good.

Hello Keith -

I recently wrote some software for a buddy that wanted a "poor man's"
repeater for his BM EFIS Lite (... something for the wife to look at
while flying in the right seat). The refresh rate on the Lite was
horrible in my opinion (~4 Hz).... especially when compared to that of
the Dynon (64 Hz!!). He claimed it didn't bother him in flight but it
drove me nuts just watching it on the bench.

Reports on the new G4's are encouraging, though. Update rates are
supposed to be much better (>20 Hz) with all of the added bells n'
whistles. He has one on order and I'm sure we'll port the repeater
software to it. I'll report back once we put some bench time on the
unit if you wish.

Please give us an update when you can! I placed an order for a EFIS/Lite Plus at Sun-n-Fun, but won't be flying for quite some time. Due to a waiting list, BMA didn't expect my order to ship until mid May.
