Have any of you guys with Experimental-Exhibition aircraft in the Reno FSDO (or elsewhere) seen something like this?

http://www.warbirds-eaa.org/AR-BC320_memo.pdf

The EAA is working the issue. Seems like another FSDO making policy on their own, as in: "We're not happy until you're not Happy".

Are we not required annually to notify the local FSDO with a program letter and the fact that we are in their jurisdiction?

Does not the FAA maintain a database that consists of a copy of our airworthiness certificate and therefore our operating limitations?

As such do they not already have everything they have asked for?

obama must be now staffing the FSDOs with his own wiz kids.

Unfortunately this is not only in Reno, it's the entire Western Region. The Riggs incident with the L-39 at the SaMo Pier pushed them over the edge. Not only did he display incredibly stupid airmanship, but he "lost" all his documentation when the FAA came calling. He also tried to play the shell game by moving the airplanes around when the FAA was looking for them. Of course the FAA finally caught up with them, and they were obviously furious when they did. Instead of taking this as an anomaly, as they should have, the FAA instead felt compelled to do something more...which now penalizes all good, dutiful, law abiding owners of EE aircraft. As usual, the stupidity and recklessness of the few ruin it for the many....

The good news is if you do as you should do regarding the administrative portion of operating your warbird, it will be a very short visit should you be ramp checked. That being said, I don't think many of us welcome this type of "invitation" of government into our lives....so make sure you are well versed in Part 43 so you can head off any potential headaches that can come from dealing with big egos, combined with big badges and three letter initials....

Tis the season for new program letters. Lets flood them. IE: coordinate a day to all fax them at the same time. If done nationwide, that might get their attention.
A little extra Christmas Cheer to have to file before the New Year.

Gang,

What Craig posted was an internal memo...you will not likely be getting anything in the mail. I have spoken with the investigators of the Riggs incident (yes, over a year ago) and they told me this was coming.

What you can expect is an increased likelihood of a ramp check. Have your paperwork in order, and know Part 43. This directive currently applies to the Western Region only (so far). Frankly, they do not have the manpower to accomplish their objectives (check the records of every EE aircraft in 2 years), but needless to say, we are a more prominent target on their radar and should be prepared accordingly.

Happy Flying and Merry Christmas!

Barry

Barry,
I'm curious about your comment "and know Part 43". What, in your opinion, must everyone know about Part 43 except for Part 43, paragraph 1.b.?
Merry Christmas,
Dennis

Berry,

I have received a letter very similar to the one posted for my Yak-52.
I have not yet replied to the letter.

It may be that my Yak-52 is still registered in Reno.
Since it has not flown since brining it home, I have not completed
the transfer.
But once again, I hope to have it flying by summer.

Fish,

Thanks. I re-read the letter and indeed it is addressed to specific individuals. I was aware that this mandate was an internal Western Region action, but that they are sending letters out is the first tangible step.

This confirms to me that they realize they don't have the manpower to implement their original plan, and that was to physically inspect (again) every plane. Yes, this letter presents an administrative annoyance, but we should all have these docs. Be SURE that you understand your Ops Limits and what is required....this review does present the opportunity for the proverbial can of worms.

Happy Flying,

Barry
