Hi! I've been away from the list since a few years. I have flown my CH601-HD for more than 400 hours now with the Subaru engine.

About three years ago, I bought a Franklin 4a-235-b31 engine that has been sitting in my garage since. Well, don't know why, but I got a spur of motivation to work again on the plane. So, I hope to install the new engine this year. Can't believe how expensive are aircraft engine accessories!

The Subaru still runs well. For the first few years, I have valve issues (valve seats were burning). Since this has been resolved, it requires nearly no maintenance, except for my reduction drive that needs a shaft resleeve every 100 hours or so (the lower front bearing becomes slack). This setup may be for sale eventually (along with boxes of spare parts including a complete 2nd engine block).

Anyway, I don't know how much good stuff I missed from this list, but I'll try to keep up to date and contribute.

Cheers!

Hi Michel,
It has been a while. Could you elaborate more on the shaft re-sleeve?
I've not heard of that one before now. I've only 150 hours on my
601HDS/Subaru and
it's been rather trouble free, save replacing one belt and consumables
after 5 years. Are you burning mostly 100LL?

I have a Dave Johnson reduction drive which has a bearing in front of the lower pulley. After a while, no matter how tight the fitting of the bearing is on the shaft, it starts to slip on the shaft. I also tried with the shaft/bearing assembly compound from Permatex... my machine shop believes that this is because it is a ball or roller bearing while the engine includes a different bearing design and the is a small movement of the shaft relative to the bearing assembly (shaft clearance in the engine is about .002 if I remember.

I noticed I did not respond to your fuel question. I am using exclusively 91 octane auto fuel (Super Unleaded). I use Castrol Syntec 5-50 engine oil which is not compatible with leaded fuel.

I wondered Michel,
My Stratus Subaru burns almost exclusively 78-octane and I don't burn it
in the plane. If it's older than 3 months in the can,
then it goes into the wife's car.
On oil, I've been using 20-50 Castrol mineral based oil. Oil changes
every 50 hours. Engine is clean inside so far.

Larry:

Where in the world are you finding 78 octane these days? Did you mean 98?

Ha! You got me George,
A transposition of the mind and the fingers I guess. Yes, 87-octane to
be sure.
I've got to begin reading the stuff I type. The bumper to bumper
warranty is,
at my age, long gone.

Thanks,

Me too! If I'd have known I'd live so long, I would have signed up for the
extended warranty. Too soon old, too late smart.
