Hi Folks,
I have a friend that ask if anyone on the list may be familiar with or have any experience with Rotax Rick - [url=http://www.barnstormers.com//contact_seller.php?to=83456&id=405635&title=TOO MANY 503\'s SOME GOT TO GO &return=%2FEngines%2B-%2BPiston%2C%25202-Stroke%2520Classifieds.html] RED GOLD ROTAX ENGINES & OVERHAULS[/url], Broker - located Naples, FL. They sell Rotax engines with red shrouds. Since this isn't directly Kolb related if you don't mind please reply to me direct. I have never heard of these folks yet they claim to sell a lot of engines.

Looks fishy to me. If they're not an actual Rotax dealer, I'd be very careful to confirm that OEM (correct) parts and Rotax procedures were used in the building of the engines. I.e. if they start talking about "ceramic coated" pistons and such or aftermarket parts in general, I wouldn't go near it.

Without knowing better I'd say you're better off in the long run buying new from a known Rotax dealer. Otherwise I'd still be really careful....

What is your reasoning for staying away from aftermarket parts? Have you or someone you know had a bad experience with them in your engine? I'm not really familiar with aftermarket for UL engines but I know with dirt bikes I would take an aftermarket piston and ring in a heart beat!

Well, I'm not Lucien, but for starters, if you're dirt bike engine seizes you might have to take a little hike to get back someplace for help. If your aircraft engine seizes you might be the star of the funeral. Yes, Rotax engines and parts are pricey but you get a 30 year trail of engineering to make your engine reliable. After market stuff may be fine or it might be.......

That is true... but I've never seized an engine of any type! Rotax's have seized even with OEM parts so...??? Sometimes I think Rotax banks on the fear factor... all the way to the bank! I believe owner maintenance and running procedures are the deciding factor as to how well an engine does... period!

The OEM parts used in the aircraft Rotax 2-strokes are specifically designed for those engines and for when they're used for aircraft duty.

The most commonly cheaped-out parts are the pistons and gasket sets because these are some of the parts percieved as the most exhorbitantly expensive. Then there're things like the small-end needle bearings, etc.
The stock pistons have a different metallurgy than the sno-mo replacements, in particular they have a different expansion rate. Critical to prevent seizures when doing aircraft duty. The El Cheapo pistons are usually missing a ring and are made of a different metal with a different expansion rate.
Aftermarket gasket sets usually have the head gasket made of the wrong material (aluminum usually; the stock one is a different metal. YOu can tell the difference with a magnet) and the crank seals missing the Viton covering on the inner lip. I'm told the aftermarket seal goes longer before leaking, but the Viton adds strength to the lip which can help as far as catastrophic failure of the seal.

Sometimes the cageless needle bearings in the con rod small end are replaced with a different caged bearing. Not good - Rotax went to the cageless specifically to get more needles in there and thus more bearing surface area and more strength.

So by the time you've cheaped out your engine with this stuff, you got something you don't really necessarily want to fly with.

In the end, the cheapest route is just going with the correct stuff which leads to the longest lasting motor and the most enjoyable flight time....
