Afternoon List, for a while now I have heard that the control harmony of the 601/650 is a bit off with slower roll rates and more sensitive pitch. I was reading an article regarding vortex generators in Kitplanes a few months ago and noted that some designers had for example found that their rudder size was not sufficient to provide the require forces. To rectify this without a redesign some designers had been able to add VGs on, for example, the vertical stabliser a couple of inches before the moving rudder control surface.

Has anyone tried putting VGs before the ailerons to increase their effectiveness and therefore more closely harmonise the controls?

James

Hi James,

I don't deserve recognition as an expert on this subject. Still, I don't
think vortex generators would have much impact, if any, on the stiff
ailerons. I believe this comes from simple mechanics - the huge size of the
ailerons combined with the leverage built into the stick, bellcrank, and
aileron control point. This doesn't seem to impact the ability of the pilot
to get roll response from force input to the stick. It just limits the
motion of the stick in response to that force.

I have noticed that balancing the ailerons makes them easier to move. I
don't know how this change plays out for the entire system since I have only
done one aileron so far.

If you want to create "Control Harmony" that elusive trait so praised by
aviation magazine article authors and nearly nobody else I suggest you
reengineer the leverage in the aileron system.

Paul,

Just an FYI, I have flex hinges and am now back flying with the aileron counter weights. There is no change in their movement. Stiff before the upgrades and still the same stiffness afterwards. Personally I am OK with that. It is the sensitive pitch axis that I still do not enjoy very much.

Hi Paul, it is not the stiffness but rather that increased airflow directed directly onto the aileron from the VG increases aileron effectiveness. Therefore the angle of deflection per angle of stick movement remains the same but airflow at a different angle is deflected onto the aileron making it more effective.

I can't remember the Kitplanes issue but if you read Barnaby Wainfan's recent articles you will see it in there.

Has anyone tried this?
