When draining the used oil from the oil tank, what prevents air from getting
into the suction tube? All of the oil is out of the tank and the end of the
suction tube is exposed to atmospheric air.

Rotating the prop ONLY in the normal operating direction May be advised in
order to 1. fill oil tank to check oil level properly, 2. prevent pushing
air into oil delivery passages due to turning prop backwards, and 3.
prevent air from being sucked into oil passages because header tank is
empty and suction tube might draw air instead of oil. At least these are
the explanations I recall from the Lockwood maint course.

You would have to turn the engine over (rotate the prop) in order to move
the oil in the lines and introduce air into the plumbing.
I suppose the same could be said regarding the oil filter. Don't turn the
engine over with the filter off?

				Kevin,

Would not the oil that is in the suction tube between the inlet at the
bottom of the tank and the
high point drain out when the tank is drained leaving air in this portion of
 the suction tube?
