Hi all,

My question pertains to which surfaces are covered for strengthening, in the
baggage bay.

After searching the list, no answer was found. It makes me wonder what it
is, I am not seeing.

A) '2 plies of bid at +/-45 degrees over the entire area of the baggage bay
up to the level of the top of the
central tunnel.'

This one seems self explanatory: 2 plies to 5 faces of the baggage bay:
front, rear, sides, and bottom.

B) (and my question #1)

'Next add 2 plies of 'uni', to the same height, onto the baggage bay rear
bulkhead from the sidewall to
the central tunnel, with the fibres running spanwise.'

#1 Does this mean uni is only on one face of the baggage bay (the rear
face), and no overlap on the two side faces or bottom face?

OR

Does this mean uni is placed on 3 faces of the baggage bay (rear and sides),
with no overlap to the bottom and front faces ?

OR

Something else??
#2 Is there any builder out there, that was able to massage the two plies
of BID over the whole of the baggage bay 'well', without any cutting or
folding?

I look forward to some help here,

Greg

Maybe I should rephrase my question. Instead of what the manual is saying,
what did people actually do with the uni? Is it really meant to be only on
the rear bulkhead only, with no overlapping onto the side bulkheads? If in
doubt, I am talking about the strengthening the baggage bay 'box' to be used
for the gear, and am really only looking for verification , of what others
have done, before doing the layup, so as not to mess it up. There might be
more than one way to do it. Any of my questions answered will help... So:
How many 'faces' of the 5 sided box have people put the 'uni' in when they
installed the gear? Hey, no question is a dumb question, if you're not quite
sure what the manual is saying, is it?

I read it as your option #1. and to answer your question about the bid in
one piece for the whole
job in the well, yes i managed it, but some of it was rather stretched and
other bits compressed,
but not folded, one little trick i worked out, if you have access to plastic
shopping bags,
I had about 200 used ones in the cupboard, i stuffed them into the well till
i couldnt fit any more then put
a lump of lead in there for good measure, after i did the layup, other than
the small lines in the resin
from the plastic bags, it came out looking like it was vaccum bagged.
another trick i have discovered
for those difficult bits where the glass wants to lift, if you cover the job
in plastic and then compress
a piece of sponge rubber onto/into the offending hole the job again comes
out like a vaccum bag job, excess
resin is forced out as well as the air, leaving a beautifull job.

or atleast that has been my experience

regards

craig

Craig,

So uni is only on the rear 'face' of the gear well. Suprising it doesn't lap
onto the sides at all.

Since you were able to make it work, I think I will go the non-cut route
then, for the glass in the well.

I like your plastic bag solution. I saw it, while searching the site
extensively about my 'uni' question. I don't have as many plastic bags, so I
think I will replace most of the bags with old newspaper, leaving bags on
the edges. Should make for a neat job.

Thanks for the info.

Greg

Greg,

For your second point, the uni goes over front, bottom and rear, and to the top of both bulkheads. The rather cryptic description in fact says it should be BETWEEN the the two sides and NOT lapping on to them.

As far as putting the large bid in in one piece, forget it. With a lot of force you may be able to squeeze it all in but all you will get is a heavy ball of resin rich fibre which contributes little strength. Start on one side, smooth it out and then you will find the bid starts bunching up on the other side. Cut in and take one or two triangles out. Make sure the ends overlap well and you will have a neat and structurally sound lay-up with the fibres seated properly.

That said, it is still the most horrendous job of the build (so far..)

Wishing you success and patience, Jeroen

Jeroen,

Geez!!!! Rather cryptic doesn't begin to describe the manuals
statement...or rather miss-statement. I just checked the latest PDF of this
chapter and they certainly don't say 'between' sidewall to center tunnel
(though I agree..that is probably what they mean-but who could know?). In my
interpretation, they say essentially to cover the rear bulkhead (i.e.. rear
'face' only) 'from' sidewall to center tunnel. So I think someone should
change the description in the manual if we are to get out of it what seems
to be the better way to do it.

Intuitively, it makes a whole lot more sense to me, to run the 'uni' on the
front, bottom and rear faces of the gear box....than to just run it on the
rear face only. That MUST be what the manual is trying to say. It seems that
would have a tendency to strengthen up the box to lateral forces imposed
against it, of the type that might happen by the twisting of the gear legs,
when doing a landing in which the aircraft was not quite lined up with the
runway.

Thanks so much, Jeroen! If you had not spoken up, I would have done this
ply incorrectly.

Now the ugly question. How many others did not interpret the manual
correctly? Not meaning to spread fear here, as it seems the boxes have
handled a lot of abuse, and the gear legs tend to fold before the box
does....but for those that didn't interpret the manual correctly (as I would
have done), better watch those crabbed landings to get the aircraft oriented
back to centerline before touchdown! Comments? Then again, don't we good
pilots do that anyway? Smile

I look forward to getting this most horrendous job of the build finished.

Regards...and thanks again,

Greg
